Sony begins to rollout ICS to Xperia U, Xperia Sola and Xperia Go

Xperia U

Sony recent announced it has begun to roll out Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to three of their devices. The Xperia U, Xperia Sola and Xperia Go were all released with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) as they represent entry level devices in Sony's lineup. We saw an update a few weeks back for these devices and we wondered whether or not that would pave the way for ICS, and we're glad to see that it did.

Here are some of the new features you can expect with the update:

Lock screen with better functionality
Resizable widgets
Improved control of data consumption
New ways to experience your Sony content in WALKMAN, Album and Movies
The Xperia Sola will also be getting 'glove mode', which will add Sony's "floating touch" technology to make it work well while wearing gloves

Remember, if you are going to update, you'll need to ensure that your device is attached to a computer. The update is beginning to rollout today and it will continue over the next few weeks, so if you haven't seen it yet, hold tight.

Several years ago my wife and I decided to plant an above ground vegetable garden. The concept is relatively simple. You build a box to hold your soil and organic materials, and then plant your seeds. The benefit of an above ground garden is that you don't have to dig up your yard and deal with rocks, roots, and poor soil.

We were excited to get started and made a list of everything we needed. Once the box was constructed, we layered in the manure, organic materials, and top soil. Finally, we laid out our vegetable rows and planted the seeds, topped with a light layer of planting straw, and watered. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Every morning as soon as it was light, I would run out to the garden to see what was growing. Every morning it was the same story, nothing. I was discouraged.

Starting a business from home to earn income online is a lot like planting a vegetable garden from seeds. You work like crazy to get from the idea stage to implementation. You create your business plan, design a website, find someone to host your blog, build an auto responder, write and track your ads, create content, etc. You are ready and anxious to make sales, and nothing happens. It is like your seeds have been planted and you are waiting for the seeds to grow. But it is not happening fast enough.

Like nature, "growing" a successful online business from your home requires an understanding of cycles. The first cycle is "startup" which is defined by frenzied activity that is new and exciting because you are taking a bold step towards securing you financial independence. The second cycle is the "planting" of your business where you are initiating the promotional campaign necessary to generate a list of prospects that can be converted to loyal customers. The third cycle is the "harvest" where you experience actual sales revenue and profit from your efforts.

The timing of these cycles is what I believe discourages many who start their own home based businesses with the best of intentions. For me, the startup cycle was fun, energizing, and exciting. I love to learn new things and this phase was pure joy. Same with the planting cycle; nothing but positive energy and anticipation. In the first 6 months of my online business venture, I brought in a total of $20. All that time, effort, and money for twenty bucks?! This is where my vegetable garden experience helped.

From the time that we planted the seeds in our new vegetable garden, it took 6 weeks of daily watering and plucking weeds before we saw the earliest signs of seed germination. From that point, it was another 6 weeks of watering, weeding, and pest control before the garden actually started to take on the look of a garden that was going to produce results. Four months into it, we started taking out fresh organic vegetables and putting them on the dinner table. The harvets cycle was very satisfying, but it took alot of patience and confidence that with the right effort, the vegetables would grow.

Back to the business - Most people who have not had the vegetable garden experience would have given up after making only twenty bucks after six months. Not me. I knew that the seeds had been planted, and I was diligently watering and weeding daily in the form of email marketing and content distribution to build my subscriber list. True, six months may seem like a long time to not generate revenue from your efforts, but it really isn't if you consider that the business can support you for the rest of your life. The patience and persistence paid off when the money came flowing in, just like tomatoes ripening on the vine.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? No. 9 West Virginia and the Big 12, perfect together.

Geno Smith and the fast-moving, high-scoring Mountaineers proved they fit right in with their new conference, outracing No. 25 Baylor 70-63 on Saturday in the Big 12's highest-scoring game ever.

Smith tied a conference mark with eight touchdown passes and narrowly missed another one with 656 yards passing.

"It did feel like one of those classic Texas shootouts," said Smith, whose school moved over from the Big East this season. "That's kind of what the Big 12 is about."

Smith outdueled Baylor's Nick Florence, who broke Heisman Trophy-winning predecessor Robert Griffin III's school record with 581 yards. Florence threw for five TDs.

School, conference and FBS marks all got rewritten in this one.

The game also set a new record for the most points scored in a game involving a team ranked in The Associated Press poll. The previous mark of 124 was set in No. 12 Oklahoma's 82-42 win over Colorado in 1980.

How wild was it? Smith, the early Heisman front-runner, had more TD passes than incompletions (six). He finished 45 of 51 and still doesn't have an interception this season.

"Can you please tell me how you can improve on that?" West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said.

Maybe not on offense, but both defenses have plenty of work to do.

West Virginia amassed a school-record 807 yards and the teams combined for 1,507 yards of offense and 67 first downs. Six receivers had at least 100 yards receiving.

The Bears' Terrance Williams set a Big 12 record with 314 yards receiving. The old mark was set minutes earlier by West Virginia's Stedman Bailey, who had 303 yards and a school-record five TDs.

Williams' 8-yard scoring catch brought Baylor (3-1) within 70-63 with 3:08 left.

But Dustin Garrison ran for 17 yards on third down and the Mountaineers ran out the clock to snap Baylor's nine-game winning streak, the second-longest in the nation.

"We expect to score that many points a game," Florence said. "But the goal is to score more than our opponent and we came up a little short today."

The combined 19 touchdowns tied an FBS mark, last reached when Navy beat North Texas 74-62 in 2007. That matchup set the FBS record for most points in a regulation game at 136.

Baylor, meanwhile, tied an FBS mark for the most points scored by a losing team.

Among the other records, Smith set school single-game marks for completions, yards and touchdown passes.

Bailey and Tavon Austin became the first FBS teammates with 200 yards receiving since 2007.

Going back to the Orange Bowl, West Virginia has scored 10 touchdowns three times in its last five games.

"Statistically, it's my best game ever," Smith said. "But I think it's more about the team, and I think it just lets us know that we're going to have to battle it out every week against some really tough teams in the Big 12.

"I could care less about a Heisman Trophy. The big thing for us what that we won the game today. We're on a mission, and we want to win them all."

West Virginia went ahead for good early in the third quarter, but Baylor almost always had an answer.

Austin made long touchdown grabs three minutes apart while Baylor punted and missed a long field goal. Smith stayed in a groove, throwing three passes of 45 yards or more in the third quarter alone. His 47-yarder to Bailey set up Andrew Buie's second short TD run for a 56-35 lead.

The way this game was going, though, no cushion was safe.

Williams caught a 37-yard scoring pass from Florence and, after Baylor's defense forced a rare punt, Florence's sneak brought the Bears within 56-49, and there was still 14:14 left.

But Bailey scored on TD grabs of 87 and 39 yards after that.

"We fought hard," said Baylor coach Art Briles. "But we didn't respond well enough to win the game."

Holgorsen talked at length about how impatient he got watching Maryland's offense run the clock down before each snap last week.

There was no chance of a slowdown from Baylor.

The teams scored on 10 of their final 13 possessions of the first half. Seven of those drives lasted under two minutes.

Smith, whose passing yardage total was 5 yards shy of the Big 12 mark, completed a school-record 14 straight passes at one point. After a dropped pass, Smith completed 12 more in a row.

Smith's fourth TD pass came with 29 seconds left until halftime, but that was more than enough time for Florence. On second down he threw down the left sideline to Lanear Sampson, who juked two defenders and went 67 yards untouched to tie the score at 35-35.

The Mountaineers now must hope they can generate points on the road when they head to No. 12 Texas and Texas Tech over the next two weeks.

"Not every Big 12 game is like this," Holgorsen said.

Probing the mysteries of cracks and stresses

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Diving into a pool from a few feet up allows you to enter the water smoothly and painlessly, but jumping from a bridge can lead to a fatal impact. The water is the same in each case, so why is the effect of hitting its surface so different?

This seemingly basic question is at the heart of complex research by a team in MIT's Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) that studied how materials react to stresses, including impacts. The findings could ultimately help explain phenomena as varied as the breakdown of concrete under sudden stress and the effects of corrosion on various metal surfaces.

Using a combination of computer modeling and experimental tests, the researchers studied one specific type of stress -- in a defect called a screw dislocation -- in one kind of material, an iron crystal lattice. But the underlying explanation, the researchers say, may have broad implications for many kinds of stresses in many different materials.

The research, carried out by doctoral student Yue Fan, associate professor Bilge Yildiz, and professor emeritus Sidney Yip, is being published this week in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Essentially, the team analyzed how the strength of a material can increase quite abruptly as the rate of strain applied to the material increases. This transition in the rate at which a material cracks or bends, called a flow-stress upturn, has been observed experimentally for many years, but its underlying mechanism has never been fully explained, the researchers say.

"The formulation is not specific to this particular defect," Yildiz explains. Rather, she and her colleagues have figured out what they believe is a set of general principles. "We have proven that it works in this system," she says.

"There are implications that go beyond dislocations, beyond even crystals," Yip adds. But before extending the work -- something the team is working on now -- the researchers had to prove the principle by applying it to a specific case, in this case the screw dislocation in iron. While other researchers have analyzed behaviors associated with particular kinds of defects in specific materials, with these new general principles, "all of a sudden we have an explanation for their data that does not require such specific assumptions," Yip says.

Flow-stress upturn "is an important phenomenon in materials," Fan says, explaining how they bend and crack in a process called plastic deformation. "It's common in all metals," he says, as well as in many other materials.

But the way that deformation varies, depending on the forces being applied, Fan says, is similar to the way the surface of water in a pool can part gently when a diver hits the surface at a certain rate of speed, but doesn't have time to part and behaves like a solid when the impact is too rapid, as in a jump from a great height.

The key is something called "strain localization," Yip says -- that is, the way an impact or other stress is confined to a small initial location, and how rapidly the applied forces can then spread beyond that point. To understand that fully, he says, the team had to analyze how the atoms and molecules move to produce this behavior.

The team found that, in addition to the rate at which the strain is applied, the effect depends critically -- and in a highly predictable way -- on the temperature of the material. "People think they're independent," Fan says, but it turns out the effects of strain rate and temperature are strongly related.

The effects are quite dramatic, Yildiz says: The rate of change taking place within the material can suddenly change by orders of magnitude, transforming a slow erosion into a sudden catastrophic fracture. The analysis could potentially help predict the breakdown of structures as varied as concrete buildings, metal pressure vessels in powerplants, and the structural components of airplane bodies, but further work will be needed to show how these basic principles can be applied to these different materials.

"I don't want to say it's going to be the exact same phenomenon" in such different cases, Yildiz says, but the underlying principles of coupled environmental factors "could explain significant differences" in the way these materials behave under stress.

"We believe this behavior is universal" among different materials, Yip says, "but we haven't proven that yet. It's the beginning of a long journey."

Ting Zhu, a professor of physics at Georgia Institute of Technology, says the MIT team's work provides "a new perspective for a longstanding puzzle on the so-called upturn behavior of flow stress. The work represents a new paradigm that synergistically integrates the theoretical modeling with atomistic calculations, thereby enabling a parameter-free explanation of the puzzle." Zhu, who was not connected with this research, adds that, "Their approach should be generally applicable to a wide range of the flow-stress problems for both crystalline and glassy solids."

The work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors and its Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering.

Warning signs seen before actor's violent end

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Probation officials openly worried about actor Johnny Lewis' mental health and his danger to others in recent months, and this week their worst fears came true.

The man who died a violent death on "Sons of Anarchy" three years ago apparently beat and strangled his landlady and attacked neighbors before falling or leaping to his own death in neighborhood near Hollywood on Wednesday afternoon.

They were the final violent acts of a man who in the previous 10 months had been repeatedly arrested, sent to counseling and had left jail only five days before his demise.

Court records and his attorney detailed attempts to help Lewis but not in time to help 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who neighbors reported screaming inside a home near the outskirts of Los Angeles' Griffith Park. The home had been ransacked, glass was shattered and a dead cat was also found inside, and Lewis' body was found in the driveway.

Lewis' cause of death is pending toxicology results, Coroner's investigative division Lt. Fred Corral said Thursday evening. Davis died from blunt head trauma and manual strangulation, he said.

The deaths came four months after a probation officer expressed grave concerns about Lewis' mental health, writing that he was "very concerned for the well-being of not only the community but that of the defendant."

Court records detail Lewis' descent from January 2012, when he attacked two men and hit them in the head with a bottle, through August, when he acted as his own attorney and pleaded no contest to felony assault.

By that point he had been arrested three times for incidents ranging from trying to break into an occupied home in Santa Monica, Calif., to resisting arrest. He had been sent to treatment programs that specialized in drug and alcohol addiction as well as mental illness.

A May 17 probation report states that "the defendant suffers from some form of chemical dependency, mental health issue and a lack of permanent housing. Given this, (Lewis) will continue to be a threat to any community he may reside."

Another probation officer had written two months earlier, "Obviously defendant's behavior is out of control and needs counseling afforded by a professional."

Lewis remained on supervised probation at the time of his death.

Lewis' attorney Jonathan Mandel said the actor had serious mental issues that seemed to surface fairly recently. He said Lewis' parents and others had tried desperately to help him.

"Johnny Lewis had a lot of problems, a lot of mental problems," Mandel said by phone Thursday. "I recommended treatment for him but he declined it."

He continued, saying: "I give a lot of credit to his parents. They were really strong in trying to help him out. They really went to bat for him, but I guess they just couldn't do enough."

Lewis' career spanned more than a decade, mainly in small roles. He played Ricky in the 2007 movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem" and was Dennis "Chili" Childress for two seasons on TV's "The O.C." He also appeared in episodes of such popular television shows as "Boston Public," ''Judging Amy," ''Malcolm in the Middle" and "Drake & Josh."

He was on "Sons of Anarchy" in 2008 and 2009 before his character was killed off.

Kurt Sutter, the show's creator and executive producer, tweeted news of Lewis' death Thursday:

"It was a tragic end for an extremely talented guy, who unfortunately had lost his way," Sutter wrote. "I wish I could say that I was shocked by the events last night, but I was not. I am deeply sorry that an innocent life had to be thrown into his destructive path."

Accused Colorado gunman made threats to psychiatrist

DENVER (Reuters) - Accused Colorado gunman James Holmes made threats to a university psychiatrist before a July shooting rampage at a suburban Denver screening of a Batman movie that killed 12 people, according to court documents released on Friday.

The University of Colorado psychiatrist reported those unspecified threats to campus police before the shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," a court document filed a week after the shooting and unsealed on Friday showed.

Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, has been charged with murder and attempted murder over the rampage, one of the worst outbursts of U.S. gun violence in recent years. In addition to those who died, 58 people were wounded.

University psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, who has testified that she treated Holmes, 24, more than a month before the July 20 shooting, has said her professional relationship with Holmes ended in mid-June.

"The relationship was terminated after the defendant made threats towards who reported the matter to the University of Colorado (CU) police department," the newly unsealed documents said.

"As a result of these actions, university administration terminated the defendant's access privileges to all or part of the Anschutz campus," the documents said.

The documents said the threats were made to a university psychiatrist, but they were heavily redacted, and Fenton's name does not appear in the document.

Prosecutors have depicted Holmes as a young man whose once promising academic career was in tatters as he failed graduate school oral board exams in June and one of his professors suggested he may not have been a good fit for his competitive Ph.D. program.

They have said that Holmes lost his access to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus after making unspecified threats to a professor on June 12, after which he began a voluntary withdrawal from his program.

ARSENAL OF GUNS

Other court documents among the 57 unsealed on Friday give more insight into a notebook that Holmes mailed to Fenton the day before the massacre.

Prosecutors expressed frustration with a published report saying the notebook was "full of details about how he was going to kill people," and included "drawings and illustrations of the massacre," according to one document.

That information, given to Fox News from an unidentified law enforcement source, violated Holmes' doctor-patient privilege, prosecutors argued in the July 25 document.

Prosecutors said Holmes began "a detailed and complex plan" to commit murder and obtain an arsenal of guns and protective armor after he was denied access to campus facilities.

Holmes' attorney Daniel King, who analysts have said appears to be laying the groundwork for a possible insanity defense, has said his client suffers from an unspecified mental illness and had tried to get help before the shooting.

Previous media reports have said Fenton reported her concerns about Holmes to a campus threat assessment team and a campus police officer.

Putin condemns bloody regime change in Middle East

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a strong warning Wednesday against inciting violent regime change in the Middle East ? an apparent rebuke to Western calls for an end to Syrian President Bashar Assad's rule.

Putin said the international community should operate as a united front to soothe the tensions in the Mideast and claimed that a bloody regime change would only fuel further unrest.

"Violence only begets violence," Putin said in a speech to foreign diplomats in Moscow.

The statement appeared to again pit Putin against President Barack Obama, who used his speech at the U.N. General Assembly this week to call for an end to the Assad regime over its violent crackdown on an uprising that began in March 2011.

Speaking about the rising violence in Syria, Obama said Tuesday that "the future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people."

"Together, we must stand with those Syrians who believe in a different vision," Obama said.

As frustration deepens at the ongoing failure of U.N.-led measures to reach a solution on Syria, officials from a coalition including the United States, the European Union and the Arab League met in the Netherlands last week to devise new ways of isolating the Assad regime.

But Putin said Wednesday that attempts to circumvent U.N.-led diplomatic efforts would prove destructive.

"Such action is fraught with potential for destabilization and chaos," Putin said. "Life has recently given us proof that this is correct. It is time for us to draw lessons from what is happening."

Activists estimate that at least 30,000 people have been killed since the Syrian revolt began and hundreds of thousands have been displaced, many fleeing to neighboring countries such as Turkey and Jordan.

In his speech, Putin also called for joint international efforts to counter terrorist threats across a number of Middle East nations, including Libya, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Egypt, and Afghanistan.

"There can be no room for double standards. Terrorists should be given a hard and unanimous rebuff," he said.

AUGUSTA, Maine ? Gov. Paul LePage has appointed Kevin Healey, currently vice president of human resources at St. Mary?s Health System in Lewiston, as vice chairman of the State Workforce Investment Board.

Healey has been a member of the workforce investment board since LePage created it last December, two months after discovering that in recent years the four regional workforce development boards had used roughly 20 percent of federal workforce training funds for job training, while the rest was used for administration and overhead. Those four regional workforce boards were eliminated and the new State Workforce Investment Board officially replaced the Maine Jobs Council last month, according to the jobs council?s website.

When asked what his priority would be in his new role, Healey said it was to make sure federal money flowing into Maine for workforce training is used effectively.

?I want to see those dollars used as efficiently as possible so more people have the skills they need to get a job,? he said. ?Not to say it hasn?t been done in the past, but I think we can do it in a more targeted and more collaborative manner.?

The workforce investment board?s new strategic plan involves collaborating with the state?s chambers of commerce to better understand the workforce needs of businesses.

The board consists of 35 members from the business, economic development and education fields, as well as a few legislators, according to the state website. It is tasked with advising the administration and Legislature on workforce development issues, as well as managing the effort to improve Maine?s workforce development system so it is able to meet the future needs of Maine employers.

In his current position at St. Mary?s, Healey is responsible for all aspects of human resources management for both the health system and St. Joseph hospital. Previously, he served as a human resources division director at Unum in Portland and as the executive director of the Unum Foundation.

Healey?s ?background in human resources and management will serve the board and Mainers well,? Fred Webber, chairman of the workforce investment board, said in a statement.

Is the uncertainty principle misunderstood?

More than 80 years after the uncertainty principle was first proposed, scientists are ironing out some uncertainties about the famous physics notion.

The uncertainty principle, proposed in 1927 by German physicist Werner Heisenberg, states that the more precisely a particle's position is measured, the less precisely its momentum can be known, and vice versa. It has long been invoked to describe the way measuring an object disturbs that object.

But a new experiment shows this doesn't have to be true.

"You don't have to add more uncertainty to a quantum system by measuring it," said Lee Rozema, a graduate student at the University of Toronto who led a new study of the uncertainty principle.

Rozema and his colleagues found this aspect of the uncertainty principle is often misunderstood, and that quantum measurements don't wreak as much havoc on what they're measuring as many people, including physicists, assume. [Graphic: Nature's Tiniest Particles]

The researchers used the test case of a particle of light, called a photon. They wanted to measure the polarization, or orientation, of the photon. In order to avoid disturbing the photon any more than was absolutely necessary, they employed a method called weak measurement, which indirectly measures a quantum system by analyzing its interactions with a related quantum system.

"If you want to make a measurement without disturbing your system, then you can make the interaction very weak, but then you don't get very much information on the system," Rozema told LiveScience. "What we do instead is do it many, many times and build up statistics."

In the case of the photon, the physicists measured the interaction between the particle's polarization and its position in space. After repeated measurements, they arrived at an estimation of the photon's polarization. They then used an apparatus to directly measure the photon's polarization, and compared the results.

"The disturbance that we found is less than what you'd get if you naively applied the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to the measurements," Rozema said.

Previously, researchers have had a hard time studying how much a measurement disturbs a system, because they haven't been able to separate the intrinsic disturbance any measurement would make from the disturbance particular to the measuring apparatus. Weak measurement solves this problem.

The findings don't disprove Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, but they help clarify it, Rozema said. The uncertainty quantified in the principle isn't a result of measurement, but originates in the intrinsic uncertainty of all subatomic, quantum systems, due to the fact that particles exist in states of probability, rather than certainty.

"Your quantum system still has the uncertainty in it that Heisenberg's uncertainty principle says it does," Rozema said. "But you don't have to add more uncertainty to the quantum system by measuring it."

A paper detailing the study was published earlier this month in the journal Physical Review of Letters.

Intramural Sports might seem like a normal sports organization on campus, which could lead to the misconception of a rigid period of try-outs and a brutal amount of practice with swearing coaches. However, Intramural Sports are more about camaraderie than competition.

What else could one expect from an organization that offers zombie dodgeball as a team sport?

While the idea of a sport called zombie dodgeball is strange, it and the other items that the Intramural Sports organization has to offer all hinge on one idea: Teamwork.

The point of Intramural Sports is not to become professional athletes; instead it pushes students on campus to either form a team with a group of friends or branch out and meet new people. Intramural Sports are a way to not only enjoy playing various sports with old and new friends, but also to have a non-stressful environment in which to do so.

Farron Fowler has been the coordinator for Intramural Sports for the Student Recreation Center since the spring 2012 semester. His job is to oversee all the facets of Intramural Sports. His job includes leading free agents? and coaches? meetings and training officials on the rules of the sports.

?Intramural offers you the opportunity to meet new people; that?s the number one thing,? said Fowler. ?Usually (students) come with a friend and then you are added to a team of people you don?t know. So you meet new people and you?re inside the (Student Recreation Center) which is a phenomenal place of energy and excitement of the program. You get to experience a part of college that a lot of people don?t.?

Fowler also said new sports have been added this semester, with indoor soccer and zombie dodgeball being new additions to the Intramural Sports organization as well as certain sports being available for single day tournaments.

Lawrence Martinez, 18, a pre-business major, has taken part in intramural basketball since the spring 2012 semester and enjoys the competitive nature mixed with the ability to create a team full of his friends.

?You get to bond with your friends since you pick your own teams,? said Martinez. ?You feel that chemistry with your friends throughout the season? It?s really just about getting along and knowing how everyone plays together.?

Even with a heavy enrollment and positive feedback from participants, some students are still unaware that Intramural Sports are available on campus. One such student was Eduardo Miranda, 26, a broadcast journalism major. This semester is Miranda?s first semester being involved in Intramural Sports, but he has hit the ground running by joining the basketball league and soccer league this semester.

?This is my first time playing intramural (sports),? said Miranda. ?I didn?t even know about it. I transferred and I live in LA so I travel a lot. I really don?t know everything this school has to offer.?

This semester Intramural Sports offers basketball, softball, indoor and outdoor soccer, zombie dodgeball and flag football. There are options for coed teams as well as single gender. Tennis, racquetball, table tennis and badminton are also being offered as one-day tournaments.

Gilbert Melendez injury causes Strikeforce to cancel Saturday?s card

Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez was hit with an injury just a week before he was scheduled to fight Pat Healy. He had to withdraw from the fight. Without Healy-Melendez, Showtime decided not to air the card. Without Showtime, Strikeforce canceled the event.

"When Showtime informed us that it would not be airing the event, we made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday's card in Sacramento," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said via press release. "Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event. We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards."

This is the second major injury to hit Strikeforce recently. UFC heavyweight Frank Mir pulled out of his Nov. 3 bout with Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champ Daniel Cormier with an injury.

Healy told Bloody Elbow Radio that he was told he would not be fighting again until Melendez is healthy, and that he wasn't given the option to fight someone else.

"I'm like in a daze, still. I have to think about, if Gil's going to be out six months and I have to wait the whole time, I have to start making some plans to make money right now so I'm not in a situation where I have to make money right before training for a fight," Healy said.

Outside of Melendez Healy, Saturday's card featured:

Those fighters didn't create enough firepower for Showtime. Perhaps a re-airing of the "Weeds" season finale will be enough for the network instead of a live sporting event.

This creates a problem for the Strikeforce fighters on the card. One of the complaints heard most often from Strikeforce fighters is that they don't fight enough. In 2012, Strikeforce has held just five fight events. With such infrequency, fighters have few chances to fight and make money from their fight purse and sponsors.

Outside the main event, Strikeforce has nine fights place. Though there is room on the Nov. 3 card, it won't be enough to accommodate every fighter. Plus, the fighters thought they were getting paid on Sept. 29, and best case scenario has them getting paid a month from now. Fighting is never an easy way to make a living, but cancelling cards in the last minute makes the job much harder.

Bonnie Franklin fighting pancreatic cancer

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Bonnie Franklin, who starred in the sitcom "One Day At a Time," has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, her family said Monday.

In a statement released by CBS, the family said the 68-year-old actress is undergoing treatment and continuing her normal schedule.

Franklin, who lives in Los Angeles, and her family "remain extremely positive" and asked that her privacy be respected.

The petite, red-headed actress starred as single mom Ann Romano in the hit CBS comedy "One Day At a Time," which aired from 1975 to 1984. Her co-stars included Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli.

On her Twitter account, Phillips sent "out love and sweet prayers" to the "incomparable Bonnie Franklin."

Franklin's recent credits include appearances on "The Young and the Restless" and "Hot in Cleveland," which reunited her with Bertinelli.

On stage, Franklin was in the original Broadway production of "Applause," for which she received a 1970 Tony Award nomination, and other plays including "Dames at Sea" and "A Thousand Clowns."

Her family said Franklin is grateful for people's support and concern as she fights cancer.

I have a friend who suffered a work accident and a drug test showed THC; she was fired. So, how do I find a job where I can use my medicine and not fear discipline or dismissal?

You have no legal right in California to use marijuana and keep a job. A letter of recommendation does not stop you from being fired (or not hired). The case of Ross v. RagingWire Telecommunications in 2008 gives employers the right to fire you for cannabis use.

However, there are ways. I spoke with Rick Pfrommer, one of the people in charge of hiring at Harborside Health Center dispensary in Oakland, about how cannabis patients can discuss pot use with their employers.

?If you really must use cannabis medicinally,? he said, ?get as much documentation as you can. Not just a note from a doctor that mostly writes letters of recommendation, but one from your primary-care physician. Get two letters if you can. Have all of your medical records ready to go.?

He even advises you to talk to human resources about it, if you?re comfortable doing that. ?Tell them you don?t do it at work, that it doesn?t affect your performance and that you have your medical records,? Pfrommer said, adding that it might not work, so you may just have to abstain for a month, if it?s just a pre-employment screening.

But Joe Elford, lawyer with Americans for Safe Access and attorney on the Ross case, says help may be on the way. Senate Bill 129, introduced by Sen. Mark Leno in 2008 but vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, is set to be reintroduced next year. It would prevent employers for firing medical-cannabis users for failing drug tests, although they could still be fired for being impaired on the job.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? A senior commander in Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard warned that Iran will target U.S. bases in the region in the event of war with Israel, raising the prospect of a broader conflict that would force other countries to get involved, Iranian state television reported Sunday.

The comments by Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads the Guard's aerospace division, came amid tension over Iran's nuclear program and Israel's suggestion that it might unilaterally strike Iranian nuclear facilities to scuttle what the United States and its allies believe are efforts to build a bomb. Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

Hajizadeh said no Israeli attack can happen without the support of its most important ally, the United States, making all U.S. military bases a legitimate target.

"For this reason, we will enter a confrontation with both parties and will definitely be at war with American bases should a war break out," Hajizadeh said in remarks that were posted on the website of Iran's state Al-Alam TV. U.S. facilities in Bahrain, Qatar and Afghanistan would be targeted, he said.

"There will be no neutral country in the region," Hajizadeh said. "To us, these bases are equal to U.S. soil."

The U.S. Fifth fleet is based in Bahrain and the U.S. has a heavy military presence in Afghanistan.

The Iranian warning appears an attempt to reinforce the potential wider consequences of an attack by Israel. The message is not only intended for Washington, but to its Gulf Arab allies that are fearful of a regional conflict that could disrupt oil shipment and cripple business hubs in places such as Dubai and Qatar's capital Doha.

It also comes during a major show of naval power in the Gulf by U.S.-led forces taking part in military exercises, including mine-sweeping drills. The U.S. Navy claims the maneuvers are not directly aimed at Iran, but the West and its regional allies have made clear they would react against attempts by Tehran to carry out threats to try to close critical Gulf oil shipping lanes in retaliation for tighter sanctions.

Despite Israeli hints of a military strike, Iran's military commanders believe Israel is unlikely to take unilateral action against Iran. The Guard's top commander, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said last week that Iran believes the United States won't attack Iran because its military bases in the Middle East are within the range of Iran's missiles.

Iran has also warned that oil shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz will be in jeopardy if a war breaks out between Iran and the United States. Iranian officials had previously threatened to close the waterway, the route for a fifth of the world's oil, if there is war.

Israel believes that any attack on Iran would likely unleash retaliation in the form of Iranian missiles as well as rocket attacks by Iranian proxies Hezbollah and Hamas on its northern and southern borders.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says international diplomatic efforts and economic sanctions against Iran have failed to deter its nuclear ambitions, and he has urged President Barack Obama to declare "red lines" that would trigger an American attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, coupling his appeals with veiled threats of an Israeli attack.

Obama has rejected these calls, saying diplomacy and U.S.-led sanctions must be given more time and that Iran will never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. American officials have pressed Israel not to attack Iran unilaterally, a move that could set off regional mayhem just ahead of the November election.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is currently in New York to attend the annual U.N. General Assembly and could seek to use his speech and meetings later this week to highlight the possible risks ? including sharply higher oil prices ? if military action is taken.
