OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? A peaceful protest that shut down the Port of Oakland to show the broadening reach of the Occupy Wall Street movement ended in violence when police in riot gear arrested dozens of protesters overnight who broke into a vacant building, shattered downtown windows, sprayed graffiti and set blazes along the way.

At least four protesters were hospitalized Thursday with various injuries, including one needing stitches after fighting with an officer, police said. Several officers were also injured but didn't need hospitalization.

"We go from having a peaceful movement to now just chaos," protester Monique Agnew, 40, said early Thursday.

Protesters also threw concrete chunks, metal pipes, lit roman candles and molotov cocktails, police said.

The far-flung movement of protesters challenging the world's economic systems and distribution of wealth has gained momentum in recent weeks, capturing the world's attention by shutting down one of the nation's busiest shipping ports toward the end of a daylong "general strike" that prompted solidarity rallies across the U.S.

Several thousands of people converged on the Port of Oakland, the nation's fifth-busiest harbor, in a nearly five-hour protest Wednesday, swarming the area and blocking exits and streets with illegally parked vehicles and hastily erected, chain-link fences afterward.

Port spokesman Isaac Kos-Read said evening operations had been "effectively shut down."

Port officials hoped to resume maritime operations Thursday "and that Port workers will be allowed to get to their jobs without incident. Continued missed shifts represent economic hardship for maritime workers, truckers, and their families, as well as lost jobs and lost tax revenue for our region."

Supporters in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and elsewhere staged smaller-scale demonstrations. Each group said its protest was a show of support for the Oakland movement, which became a rallying point when an Iraq War veteran was seriously injured in a clash with police last week.

The larger Occupy movement has yet to coalesce into an organized association and until the port shut down had largely been limited scattershot marches, rallies and tent encampments since it began in September.

Organizers in Oakland viewed the strike and port shutdown as a significant victory. Police said that about 7,000 people participated in demonstrations throughout the day that were peaceful except for a few incidents of vandalism at local banks and businesses.

Boots Riley, a protest organizer, touted the day as a success, saying "we put together an ideological principle that the mainstream media wouldn't talk about two months ago."

His comments came before a group of protesters broke into the former Travelers Aid building in order to, as some shouting protesters put it, "reclaim the building for the people."

Riley, whose anti-capitalist views are well documented, considered the port shutdown particularly significant for organizers who targeted it in an effort to stop the "flow of capital."

The port sends goods primarily to Asia, including wine as well as rice, fruits and nuts, and handles imported electronics, apparel and manufacturing equipment, mostly from Asia, as well as cars and parts from Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai.

An accounting of the financial toll from the shutdown was not immediately available.

The potential for the chaos that ultimately erupted was not something Riley wanted to even consider.

"If they do that after all this ..." said Riley pausing cautiously, then adding, "They're smarter than that."

But the peace that abided throughout a sunny warm autumn Wednesday, as protesters hung a large black banner downtown that read: "DEATH TO CAPITALISM," did not last as a cool midnight approached.

Occupy protesters voicing anger over a budget trim that forced the closure of a homeless aid program converged on the empty building where it had been housed just outside of downtown.

They blocked off a street with wood, metal Dumpsters and other large trash bins, sparking bonfires that leapt as high as 15 feet in the air.

City officials later released a statement describing the spasm of unrest.

"Oakland Police responded to a late night call that protesters had broken into and occupied a downtown building and set several simultaneous fires," the statement read. "The protesters began hurling rocks, explosives, bottles, and flaming objects at responding officers."

Several businesses were heavily vandalized. Dozens of protesters wielding shields were surrounded and arrested.

Protesters ran from several rounds of tear gas and bright flashes and deafening pops that some thought were caused by "flash bang" grenades. Fire crews arrived and suppressed the protesters' flames.

Protesters and police faced off in an uneasy standoff until the wee hours of the morning.

In Philadelphia, protesters were arrested earlier Wednesday as they held a sit-in at the headquarters of cable giant Comcast.

In New York, about 100 military veterans marched in uniform and stopped in front of the New York Stock Exchange, standing in loose formation as police officers on scooters separated them from the entrance. On the other side was a lineup of NYPD horses carrying officers with nightsticks.

"We are marching to express support for our brother, (Iraq war veteran) Scott Olsen, who was injured in Oakland," said Jerry Bordeleau, a former Army specialist who served in Iraq through 2009.

The veterans were also angry that returned from war to find few job prospects.

"Wall Street corporations have played a big role in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Bordeleau, now a college student. He said private contractors have reaped big profits in those countries.

A New York Post editorial on Thursday called on protesters camped out in Manhattan to leave or have police evict them. "What began as a credible protest against bank bailouts, crony capitalism and the like has, in large measure, been hijacked by crazies and criminals," it said.

In Boston, college students and union workers marched on Bank of America offices, the Harvard Club and the Statehouse to protest the nation's burgeoning student debt crisis. They said total outstanding student loans exceed credit card debt, increase by $1 million every six minutes and will reach $1 trillion this year, potentially undermining the economy.

"There are so many students that are trying to get jobs and go on with their lives," said Sarvenaz Asasy, of Boston, who joined the march after recently graduating with a master's degree and $60,000 in loan debt. "They've educated themselves and there are no jobs and we're paying tons of student loans. For what?"

And among the other protests in Oakland, parents and their kids, some in strollers, joined in by forming a "children's brigade."

"There's absolutely something wrong with the system," said Jessica Medina, a single mother who attends school part time and works at an Oakland cafe. "We need to change that."

Parishioners asked to attend church unarmed (Reuters)

MILWAUKEE (Reuters)- Roman Catholic bishops in Wisconsin are urging their parishioners not to bring weapons to church now that a new law permits state residents to carry concealed firearms.

"Intuitively, we understand that acts of violence, destruction, and murder are antithetical to the message and person of Jesus Christ and have no rightful place in our society, especially sacred places," the bishops said just before the law went into effect on Tuesday.

"We ask that all people seriously consider not carrying weapons into church buildings as a sign of reverence for these sacred spaces," they said.

The statement, issued by Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki and four other bishops, said a decision on whether to ban weapons was up to individual churches.

Residents with a valid permit are allowed to carry concealed handguns, electric weapons such as stun guns or tasers, knives other than switchblades, and billy clubs.

Machine guns, short-barreled rifles and short-barreled shotguns remain prohibited.

An employer may bar an employee from carrying concealed weapons at work, but cannot prohibit an employee from keeping concealed weapons in the employee's vehicle, even if it is parked on employer property.

The law mandates four hours of instructor-led training to carry a concealed weapon, or completion of a hunter safety course through the state.

Hat trick lifts Messi past 200 goals

Lionel Messi

By ROB HARRIS

updated 9:44 p.m. ET Nov. 1, 2011

Lionel Messi broke the 200-goal barrier for his Barcelona career with his second straight hat trick in a 4-0 win at Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night that advanced the club to the Champions League knockout stage.

AC Milan also advanced with a 1-1 tie at BATE Borisov, but Arsenal and Chelsea were held to draws and will have to wait until their final two games to earn a spot in the second round.

Jonas scored the second-fastest goal in Champions League history, 10 seconds into Valencia's 3-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

Messi converted a penalty kick in the 24th minute after he was fouled by Marian Cisovsky, who was given a red card. Messi scored off a one-two with Adriano in first-half injury time and got his third from Gerard Pique's backheel pass in second-half injury time. Messi has 202 goals in his Barcelona career, including 22 in 17 games this season.

"I'm happy, but not just for the result but for how we played," Messi said.

Messi got his 14th career hat trick and second in the Champions League. His 42 Champions League goals already are ninth on the career list.

"A phenomenal player," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said after his 200th game in charge. "At 24, he has broken so many records."

Cesc Fabregas got a goal on a header in the 72nd minute from Isaac Cuenca's cross. Barcelona has outscored opponents 26-0 in its past nine games, and in the 38th minute goalkeeper Victor Valdes set the club scoreless streak record, breaking the mark of 824 minutes held by Miguel Reina since the 1972-73 season.

Defending champion Barcelona (3-0-1) leads Group H, and AC Milan (2-0-2) also advanced. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in the 22nd minute for the Rossoneri, but Renan Bressan's penalty kick after a foul by Ignazio Abate tied it in the 55th.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri and his team had wanted to win for teammate Antonio Cassano, who has been in a hospital after falling ill on the flight back to Milan following its 3-2 win at Roma on Saturday.

Visiting fans had banners showing their support for the stricken forward, and Kevin-Prince Boateng celebrated Ibrahimovic's goal with a shirt of Cassano's.

"We made a lot of mistakes, and when you do that then it can happen that you concede a goal or penalty," Allegri said. "It's normal that you have to be more clinical in finishing a game off, but we didn't do that."

Group F leader Arsenal (2-0-2) missed out on advancement with a 0-0 draw at home against Marseille (2-1-1). Borussia Dortmund (1-2-1) won 1-0 over visiting Olympiakos (1-3) on Kevin Grosskreutz's goal from 20 yards in the seventh minute.

Chelsea (2-0-2) extended its Group E lead to two points despite being held to a 1-1 tie at Genk (0-2-2) as second-place Bayer Leverkusen (2-2) lost 3-1 at Valencia (1-1-2).

"It gets a little bit tighter," Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Ramires scored for the Blues in the 26th minute after being set up by Fernando Torres, but Jelle Vossen tied it in the 61st minute.

At Valencia, Levekusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno tried to clear a back pass but delivered the ball for Jonas to sidefoot in a left-footed shot from outside the area. After Stefan Kiessling tied it in the 31st, the hosts got goals from Roberto Soldado in the 65th and Adil Rami in the 74th

APOEL (2-0-2) retained its surprise lead of Group G with a 2-1 victory over visiting Porto (1-2-1), staying a point ahead of Zenit St. Petersburg (2-1-1), which won 1-0 at home over Shakhtar Donetsk (0-2-2).

Make Labels Stand Out, Create Filters, and Other Things You May Be Confused About with the New Gmail [Gmail]

Make Labels Stand Out, Create Filters, and Other Things You May Be Confused About with the New GmailThis morning, a Lifehacker intern complained that the new Gmail made it too hard to see labels. Then a Lifehacker editor pitched in that the new Gmail makes it too hard to create filters. Not so, my friends. The new Gmail has changed a few things, though, so here's a little primer on how to handle things in the new Gmail that may have changed slightly in the redesign.

Make Your Labels Stand Out

Intern John: "I find it so hard to read the names of the labels in the new design. Dark gray on light gray? Really?"

Make Labels Stand Out, Create Filters, and Other Things You May Be Confused About with the New GmailWorry not, John and others like John! You can adjust the color for any of your labels really easily. Just click the drop-down arrow next to any label in your sidebar, choose a new label color (you can even add your own custom color!). Problem solved!

This is a feature that's been around for a while in Gmail, but if you were happy with your labels as they were, you may not have noticed. If the new Gmail's default label coloring is throwing you for a loop, there's your fix.

Make a New Filter

Make Labels Stand Out, Create Filters, and Other Things You May Be Confused About with the New GmailManaging editor Jason: "I hate that the new Gmail design makes making filters harder. You gotta remember the from: subject: whatever fields."

Au contraire, Jason! It is, in fact, easier to create a filter now. Similar to the label colors, the new create a filter functionality is hidden behind the drop-down to the right of the search box. Click that to display the new advanced search form, fill out your Tos, Froms, Subjects, and other search criteria, and click Create filter with this search. Nutritious!

Grab Bag!

I put a call out on Twitter and Google+ to see what's confusing or frustrating other people about the Gmail redesign, just in case there's a solution they just weren't aware of. So here we go:

Get Profile Pics for Your Contacts

Make Labels Stand Out, Create Filters, and Other Things You May Be Confused About with the New Gmail@BonnieMacD: "profile pics in the conversation view, since almost no one I email with has one"

Solution! Sure, if your contacts all have Google accounts and they've added profile pics, those avatars show up automatically, but your contacts don't need to have added their own profile pics in order for them to show up in conversation view. You can add your own pics to contacts by hovering over that anonymous avatar, then hovering over the larger anonymous avatar in the popup and clicking Add a picture. You can then upload a pic from your computer, add one from the web, or add one from Picasa. The cake is not a lie!

Get Rid of Ads Above the Inbox

Make Labels Stand Out, Create Filters, and Other Things You May Be Confused About with the New Gmail+Alan Smodic: "On the web, the new ad slot just above the inbox is no longer blocked by Ad Block Plus. Not a problem, just pointing it out. They clearly did something different with it and I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere."

Answer from +Daniel James: "Actually, the easy way to get rid of that is to go to your Gmail Settings, go to the tab called "Web Clips," and then uncheck the box."

Jump to the top of the inbox

+Jos? S?: "Is now more difficult to go to the top of the inbox. There no no shortcut, I have to manually scroll which is annoying."

I have no idea what Jos? is talking about in terms of what's gone missing, but there is a shortcut to get to the top of the inbox, and it works on any page. Pressing Spacebar when no form or input has focus is the equivalent of pressing Page Down. Similarly, pressing Shift+Spacebar is like pressing Page Up. And it'll jump you to the top of your inbox.

Alternately, if you have keyboard shortcuts enabled in Gmail, just press "G then I" (Go to Inbox). Voila!

Any Others?

If there was a Gmail problem
Yo, I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

To the comments!

  • How do you study? For me it depends on the subject being studied... whether it is just memorization, reading, or practice.
  • I'd like to record some audio on my computer, primarily people talking like an interview or 'Star Trek Personal Log Stardate...." or podcast. The problem is I need a program to do the actual recording and saving. A little bit of simple editing would be nice as well. Can anyone recommend one to me?
  • Anyone know how I could set up a NAS at a friend's house, and allow my computers to back up to it?
  • Maybe I'm just an idiot, but is there a way to set up Android sync so that only Calendar automatically updates?
  • My dream is to have everything on my NAS and be able to watch/listen on all of my devices both on an off my home network. I realize I may need to do some converting of the movie files. I just don't know what format would be best for all devices (or maybe there's not?)
  • How can I download an Ubuntu file on my work computer (Windows 7, if that matters), transfer it to my thumb drive, and then install it in the Ubuntu partition of my home computer?
  • My parents need a new monitor for their computer, but 1920x1080 (which seems to be all monitors sold nowadays) is too high a resolution for them. I know that if you scale down the resolution from native it creates blur, so what are people with bad eyes to do??
  • I need a really simple budget/money tracking app for iOS. I've looked at some of the "budget" apps in the App Store but I'm not sure what to try, really. Any suggestions?
  • Does anyone else have an issue with Lifehacker on Chrome where links for the site are not clickable?
  • Does anybody have any experience with a single serve hot beverage maker? I think it would be a great gift for my wife, since she's the only one in the house that drinks coffee or tea.
    Are they terrible?

Mitrione?s inexperience shows, Kongo puts it together late to win at UFC 137

Mitrione?s inexperience shows, Kongo puts it together late to win at UFC 137

LAS VEGAS - He's was dubbed "Meathead" during Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter" for a reason. Matt Mitrione has a goofy nature about him and tonight it cost him.

Mitrione never pressed on the gas pedal and allowed Cheick Kongo to grab a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 30-28, 29-28 in the co-main event at UFC 137.

The former Big 10 defensive lineman had Kongo backing up for two rounds, but when he didn't throw enough punches, it opened the door for the Frenchman to get aggressive.

Kongo scored two big slam takedowns in the final round and beat up Mitrione on the ground to lock up the fight.

[Related: UFC 137: Penn, 'Cro Cop' may retire after losses]

The first two rounds were both frustrating and exciting at times.

Kongo (17-6-2, 10-4-1 UFC) is one of the most accurate strikers in UFC history, but Mitrione didn't care. He pressed forward and made the hulking Kongo look a little scared.

"I felt like I was chasing him a lot so I couldn't force anything. I'm just really dissappointed in the whole thing," said Mitrione.

One problem though, Mitrione never let his hands go. He'd throw a flurry here or there, but he spent most of the time faking and smiling. Meanwhile, Kongo landed a few well-placed punches and scored enough with leg kicks to win over the judges. According to Fight Metric, Kongo attempted 97 strikes to just 52 from Mitrione during the first two rounds.

"I wasn't sure how to react to Mitrione's movements in the beginning. I was happy with my performance, especially my striking. I wanted to make him work. My game plan was to wait and see what he did," said Kongo.

Considering he didn't fight professionally until late 2009, it's not an awful loss for Mitrione. A defensive tackle at Purdue, Mitrione (5-1) spent several years bouncing around the NFL as he struggled with foot and ankle issues. The 33-year-old is extremely athletic with good natural fighting instincts. Tonight, he was just way too patient.

Mitrione?s inexperience shows, Kongo puts it together late to win at UFC 137

Kongo's now won three of four fights. The other one was a draw against Travis Browne.
