555TES Minute S Yamaha/Toyota Hybrid is a Hot Microcar You Can ...

555TES Minute S

This little bit of automotive nirvana is the 555TES Minute S. Powered by one of Yamaha?s high-revving 250 cc motorcycle/ATV engines coupled to Toyota?s Aqua hybrid drive system, the tiny commuter promises some seriously fun urban commuting.

Despite looking for all the world like one of those dynamically flawed 3-wheeled, motorcycle-tired fail-machines (I?m looking at you, Can-Am), the 555TES actually has 4 fat, square-section automotive tires to equalize contact patches front and rear and ensure maximum grip. Like a go-kart, the low-weight/high-grip formula is one that?s sure to thrill ? and, with an EV-only mode and tiny footprint, it might be eligible for a SUICA card.

Translation: you can take it on the subway. Can I get a ?F@#$ yeah!??

There is almost no chance that this super-awesome little runabout will make its way to the US, despite the continued presence of awful 3 wheelers sucking up tax credits and pathetic suckers? investors? dollars. It?s too bad, and a genuine loss for America?s car culture.

Here is the 555TES, on video, in motion, NOT vaporware. Try to enjoy the video, below, without shedding manly tears.

Indonesia to add photo warnings to cigarette packs

(AP) ? Indonesia has issued regulations that will require cigarette packets to bear graphic photographic warnings, a long-delayed measure in a country with one of the highest rates of smoking in the world.

The regulations were watered down following opposition by tobacco farmers and cigarette companies, and fall far short of those in many Western countries and other Asian markets. Billboard and television advertising remains widespread, as is sponsorship of sports and pop music events.

The law regulating tobacco was issued in 2009, but the supporting regulations fleshing it out were not signed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono until late December. They were posted in full on a government website late Wednesday. Tobacco companies will have 18 months to implement them.

The law bans companies from use terms such as "mild" and "light" in connection with their tobacco products, saying they are misleading. But a clause says those brands that are already registered trademarks will be unaffected, meaning that top companies with huge-selling lines will likely be able to keep selling them.

"There was lots of intervention from the companies," Tulus Bagus, from the Indonesian Consumer Foundation, said Thursday. "They are very strong."

Indonesian men rank as the world's top smokers, with two out of three of them lighting up. About 3 percent of women smoke in the country. Indonesia, with 240 million people, is the world's fourth most populous country and the fifth-largest cigarette-producing market, with an industry that employs millions.

In 2005, Philip Morris bought a large stake in Sampoerna, a local cigarette company, to expand its business in the country.

Under the new law, photos depicting the health effects of smoking must take up 40 percent of the area on the back and front of packets, less than many countries. According to the U.S. Food and Drug administration, more than 30 countries require such warnings and scientific evidence demonstrates that they encourage people to quit.

Sampoerna, whose Sampoerna Mild brand is a market leader in the country, said it was pleased to see a clause in the law specifying that people under the age of 18 were prohibited from buying or smoking cigarettes. Previously, the law said only that cigarettes were not to be sold to "young people."

Sampoerna declined further comment, saying it was studying the regulations.

Tobacco manufactures have waged an organized campaign against the laws, saying they would result in massive job losses.

"This regulation has taken into account the interests of the society without harming tobacco farmers," said Emil Agustiono, an official from the welfare ministry. "The important thing is that it will not weaken the economy."

A survey released last year by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 67 percent of all Indonesian males over 15 years old smoked. The sprawling archipelago ranked second overall with 35 percent of all males smoking, behind only Russia at 39 percent. According to WHO, smoking-related illnesses kill at least 200,000 people a year in Indonesia, where about a quarter of boys aged 13 to 15 get hooked on cigarettes, which sell for about $1 a pack.

Kartono Muhammad, an adviser to the National Commission on Tobacco Control, said the introduction of photographic warnings was a major victory, but regretted that selling cigarettes individually was not outlawed. Buying single sticks from street vendors or stalls is a common practice here.

"We didn't get all that we wanted, but that is understandable, this is a process of bureaucracy and politics," he said.

Dangers Of Energy Drinks Linked To More Emergency Room Visits, Especially For Young People

dangers-of-energy-drinks

When I used to work in film, I would typically have to wake up around 5 or 6 am if it was a daytime shoot. Everyone would sort of drag their feet and feel lethargic for the first few minutes until the coffee and energy drinks arrived, when we all were able to start functioning. In the event of a nighttime shooting schedule, we would come into work at 6 pm feeling not quite as exhausted, but right around 2 in the morning, the yawns would begin, Redbull cans would crack open and everybody would just push through the night motivated at least in part by caffeine. But these little drink-jolt-work-drink-jolt-work rituals ? ones that people in numerous fields participate in ? are increasingly becoming more unappealing as the apparent dangers of energy drinks are surfacing at an alarming rate.

New federal data?from a report by the?Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration?is showing that caffeinated beverages was linked to twice as many emergency room visits in 2011 than in 2007. Take a wild guess at how many.

?

20,783. If I had had to guess, I would?ve probably said, oh, 800. Sadly, no: problems like headaches, irregular heartbeats, anxiety and even heart attacks have often cited excessive caffeine consumption as a contributing factor.

According to the report, it?s becoming a serious health issue, particularly within younger demographics. Patients 18 to 25 were the largest group of those treated, with two-thirds being male.

?Consumption of energy drinks is a rising public health problem because medical and behavioral problems can result from excessive caffeine intake. A growing body of scientific evidence documents harmful health effects of energy drinks, particularly for children, adolescents and young adults.?

Yeah, this goes way beyond the ?caffeine stunts your growth? thing your parents used to say when you were a kid.

While a caffeine drink once in a while isn?t going to immediately harm you, putting tons of them into your body on a regular basis is dangerous. And mixing them with pills like Adderall and Ritalin or alcohol? That?s super risky behavior which 42 percent of patients treated partook in. Considering all the publicity surrounding the deaths linked to Five-Hour Energy, it?s unsettling that so many people are still unaware of ? or don?t take seriously ? the dangers of energy drinks.

While it may be tempting ? and sometimes necessary ? to consume caffeine in order to stay awake at work or thereafter, it?s important to remember that there can be longterm consequences for the opportunity to keep your mind moving. Try other routes of gaining energy, such as exercise, a better sleep schedule or a healthier diet, all of which are linked to numerous benefits and likely won?t send you to a hospital anytime soon.

Austrian man gets nine years for neo-Nazi website

VIENNA (Reuters) - An Austrian court has sentenced a leading neo-Nazi figure to nine years in jail for his role in launching an extreme-right website that glorified Nazism.

Gottfried Kuessel, 54, had denied any wrongdoing and told the court he had turned over a new leaf since serving a previous jail term for neo-Nazi activity, which is banned in Austria.

But heeding prosecutors' description of Kuessel as a prime leader of the extreme right, the jury voted 5-3 late on Thursday to convict him. Two other defendants got sentences of seven and four-and-a-half years.

Kuessel's attorney, Michael Dohr, said he would appeal against the conviction.

"I had expected an acquittal because of the very thin evidence. There was only circumstantial evidence, not more," he said in remarks broadcast by Austria's ORF radio.

Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938, and a debate still smoulders on whether Austrians were Hitler's first victims or willing accomplices. Austria's Jewish population was nearly wiped out in the ensuing Holocaust.

Jewish leaders have warned of late against what they called creeping tolerance of anti-Semitism in Austria.

A rabbi said in September that neo-Nazi soccer fans had verbally abused him while police looked on, and a far-right politician drew criticism from the country's president for posting a cartoon on his website that was widely seen as anti-Semitic.
