A family holiday to Brittany, France could make the ideal budget beating break.

TRAVELLING TO BRITTANY FROM THE UK

Getting to France couldn't be easier, either from the UK using the many excellent and well price ferry services, Channel Tunnel or low cost airlines, or from mainland Europe by car or train.

There is a good choice of ferry ports to easily access Brittany from the UK, including Roscoff, Cherbourg, Caen, Le Havre and Calais. The cheapest UK to France crossing is generally Dover-Calais, although this needs to be balanced against the further petrol or diesel use on the drive across to Brittany. Out of season, Brittany Ferries and L D Lines offer excellent value for money sailing in to ports which are significantly closer to Brittany, or in the case of St Malo and Roscoff, on the doorstep. Fuel for cars does tend to be cheaper in France, so it is worth filling the tank once you have arrived over there.

Low cost airlines fly from various UK airports into Brittany, to either Dinard, Lorient or Rennes, and out of the main UK school holiday dates there are some fantastic bargains to be had, especially if you can be flexible with your travel dates. Car hire from the airports is both straightforward and reasonably priced - compare prices in the UK and book online for the best deals.

PLENTY TO SEE AND DO

Brittany is a region of drama and variety, from the rugged coastline, soft sandy beaches, inland forests and beautiful medieval towns. To make the most of your budget break, it is suggested that staying in accommodation inland allows you to experience and explore the best of what Brittany can offer - all is within easy reach. A day on the beach, just a short drive from a central Brittany holiday home could be followed by a day kayaking on a canal or river, or exploring one of the many stunning chateaux. Brittany's many canal towpaths carving through the region from north to south, and from east to west, make it an area made for cycling, walking or horse-riding. Cycles are available to hire cheaply in many places, as are kayaks and canoes, and there are several stables to depart from on your quest to explore some of the 2000 kilometers of bridle paths the area has to offer. Of course, walking is a popular past time in the area and is free for everyone to enjoy - just remember comfortable shoes and sun lotion!

Many of the inland towns have an outside swimming pool to cool off on the hot summer days and for children to enjoy making new friends. Alternatively, try one of the beautiful inland lakes and spend the day on pedaloes, swimming or relaxing.

WHERE TO STAY

Where better to lay your head at the end of the day than in a Breton gite, full of character and with everything you could need for a perfect, budget holiday. Many have super gardens for the children to play in, and for the adults to enjoy a barbecue and glass of local wine or cider to finish the day off with. Gites tend to be very well priced and very comfortable, and many people are surprised to find that renting a gite is often cheaper than camping out under canvas or staying in a caravan.

Most villages and towns hold a weekly outdoor market, usually starting early in the morning and finishing around lunchtime. The stalls are full of colourful and reasonably priced local produce such as cheeses, fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, and handicrafts.
