Mayor and Councilman Honored at Martial Arts Belt Promotion ...

Maricopa, Arizona; January 18, 2013 ? Maricopa Mayor Christian Price and Councilman Leon Potter attended the belt promotion ceremony at ATA Martial Arts and Karate for Kids of Maricopa on Friday, January 18. Each was recognized for his service to the community with honorary Black Belts and certificates awarded at the conclusion of the 5:30pm graduation. Mayor Price and Councilman Potter were honored for their support of City programs, including recreational and educational opportunities for all ages offered through partnerships with local businesses.

Councilman Leon Potter has been a youth sports coach, sits on the Board of the Maricopa Friends of the Library, and was a member of the Parks, Recreation and Libraries Citizens Advisory Committee. Mayor Christian Price sits on the Maricopa Seniors Board as an advisory member and is a governing board member for For Our City / Citizens Corp. The current City Council will oversee the construction and determine the manner of administration of the new Multigenerational Center and Regional Park, which will offer many recreational amenities to the community in 2014.

The Mayor and Councilman presided over this latest belt promotion as guest judges with head instructor and 6th Degree Black Belt, Master Lee Feiles. Over 100 area students graduated or tested for new belt ranks over the course of the weekend, including one student testing for a new rank of Black Belt. Starting as a part-time club in a school gymnasium, the Taekwondo academy, now located at 44400 W. Honeycutt, has been teaching children and adults in Maricopa since 2005. ATA Martial Arts is a long-time provider of classes through the Maricopa Activity Guide, administered by the Parks and Recreation Division of the Community Services Department.
