East Union School District to recognize board members

AFTON ? East Union Community School District is joining other communities throughout Iowa this spring to honor its elected school board members during Iowa School Board Recognition Month during May. This year?s theme ? ?Building Brighter Futures? ? recognizes that Iowa?s volunteer school board members are providing leadership, through responsibilities ranging from financial stewardship to ensuring high-quality curriculum, to make sure all students are prepared for a ?brighter future? when they graduate.

Serving on the East Union School Board are Sarah Long, board president; Kenny Hagen, board vice president; and members, Jeanna McKinney, Brett Weis and Randy Wuebker.

?Our board members spend many hours of unpaid time so that the East Union School District provides the best possible education for our students,? said Superintendent Dr. Pam Vogel. ?It is important that our community members recognize the dedication board members have to education. They spend many hours preparing for and attending board meetings, so that they can make decisions that are in the best interest of students. Too often the efforts of school board members go unnoticed and unrewarded, so we need to thank them regularly and often for the service they give.?

East Union Board of Education will be formally recognized at the regular board meeting 5:30 p.m. May 21 in the middle/high school library.

?Even though we make a special effort in May of each year to show our appreciation for our school board members, we should recognize their contributions throughout the year for all that they give to our district, ? said Vogel. ?Our board members are committed to improving student achievement and striving for what is best for all of our students. The board has established a three-year plan that includes goals that center on increasing student learning for every child and they should be commended for this.?
