A Sunday Review photo essay chronicled a disturbing practice in South Africa in which gay men and lesbians are raped to ?cure? them of their sexual orientation. Clearly, constitutional protections have not erased homophobia in that country, and although South Africa has come far since apartheid, it has further to go to reach Nelson Mandela?s dream of a democratic nation.
