CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Interior Ministry warned supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi on Saturday for a second time to abandon their protest encampments as a senior U.S. diplomat was meeting with officials on both sides of the political divide to try to find a peaceful resolution to the standoff.

Egyptian authorities have outlined plans in recent days to break up the two main sit-ins by Morsi's supporters as they seek to end the political stalemate that has paralyzed the country since the military overthrew the Islamist leader on July 3. Morsi's backers say they will not disperse until he is returned to power, setting the stage for a potential bloody showdown if security forces move in on the two main sites that are home to tens of thousands of protesters.

In a bid to avoid more bloodshed, Deputy Secretary of State William Burns held talks Saturday with interim Egyptian President Adly Mansour as well as Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei. Burns, the No. 2 American diplomat, was also scheduled to meet with Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and their Islamist allies. The Europeans Union's special envoy, Bernardino Leon, was also involved in the talks.

Amr Darag, one of the Brotherhood representatives who was expected to meet with Burns, told The Associated Press that the group and its allies are looking for "confidence-building measures" before they will come to the table for talks with their rivals. Such measures could include releasing detained Brotherhood leaders, unfreezing the group's assets, lifting the ban on its TV stations and ending violence against its protests.

Ahead of his visit, the State Department said Burns would be discussing "the importance of avoiding violence and helping to facilitate a peaceful and inclusive political process."

The trip by Burns, his second to Cairo since the military overthrew Morsi, comes amid heighted fears of more bloodshed after more than 80 Morsi supporters were killed in clashes with police a week ago near their main Cairo sit-in. In total, more than 280 people have been killed nationwide in political violence since Morsi's removal.

The ousted president's supporters have vowed to continue their protests until he is reinstated. They have held several mass rallies across the country and daily protests outside security buildings, demanding that the crackdown on Islamists stop. They have also kept up their vigils at two main sites: one outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo and another in a large square outside Cairo University's main campus.

But a month after Morsi's ouster, many Egyptians have grown weary of the protests, complaining that they snarl traffic, prolong the nation's instability and are calling for the authorities to put an end to the sit-ins.

On Friday, authorities outlined plans to break up the encampments, saying they would set up a cordon around the protest sites while at the same time offering "safe passage" to those willing to leave.

In nationally televised remarks Saturday, Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif again urged Morsi's supporters to end their protests, saying it would pave the way for the Brotherhood's return to an official role in the political process. He repeated the offer from the ministry, which is charge of police, to protect those who abandon the demonstrations.

The Brotherhood's role in Egypt's post-Morsi politics is one of the most pressing questions in the country.

In his first visit to Cairo last month, Burns signaled that while Washington was calling for an inclusive transition, it had moved on from Morsi and his Brotherhood group. But he also stressed that Egypt's "second chance" at democracy could not happen without the Brotherhood's participation.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, who met Burns on Saturday, said Egyptian officials have made clear to their Western counterparts "that there is no moving back" and that the roadmap adopted by the country's military-backed interim leaders, which calls for elections next year, is open to the Brotherhood for participation.

"The roadmap adopted is the roadmap for this country for the upcoming period," he told reporters after meeting Burns. "Ceasing incitement and violence is, I believe, an extremely important step to take if we have any chance at achieving reconciliation in the short-term."

While Egypt's interim leaders have voiced an interest in reconciliation, they have simultaneously pursued a crackdown on the Brotherhood and its allies, arresting its senior leadership and shuttering their television stations.

In remarks published in the state-run Ahram newspaper Saturday, interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi said the United States is mostly focused on how to restore stability to Egypt.

"I don't think the United States was fond of the Muslim Brotherhood or wanted them to come (to power), and I don't think it is happy either to see them out of the picture now" he was quoted as saying "All that is asked now is that the situation stabilizes."

Morsi's supporters say their sit-ins are peaceful protests. The Interior Ministry alleges that some of the protests' participants are involved in "killings, torture and abductions." Last weekend, the ministry said 11 bodies were found near both protest sites, with some showing signs of torture. It is not clear who was behind the killings.

The London-based rights group Amnesty International also said it had testimony of alleged killings and torture at the hands of Morsi supporters inside the sit-ins, including a witness who said he saw one man stabbed and another have his throat cut.

In a new allegation, Egypt's state news agency reported Saturday that a 25 year-old worker was detained and violently beaten at one of the sit-ins. It quoted a security official as saying that the young man, identified Ahmed Abdel-Aaty Mahmoud, was found late Friday near a military factory south of Cairo with severe bruises and injuries. He told police he was abducted two days ago by pro-Morsi protesters who were participating in a march after he criticized them.

Elderberry?s to relocate to Roanoke College campus

Salem - A Salem restaurant will relocate next month to Roanoke College's campus in a move that will more than triple the size of its smoothie, soup and sandwich footprint.

Elderberry's, which also has a restaurant in Roanoke County, plans to shift its Salem shop at 304 E. Main St., across the street to an approximately 1,600-square-foot College-owned space at 13 and 15 N. College Aves. The future Elderberry's space last housed temporary classrooms in 2009 during Roanoke's Lucas Hall renovation.

Elderberry's will open in its new space in mid-August for a soft opening, said Diane Elder, co-owner of the business. The shop will debut in time for the Aug. 28 start of daytime fall classes at Roanoke.

The new space will feature a larger dining area, a conference room and additional soup, sandwich and smoothie options. It will resemble the design and menu offerings at the Elderberry's flagship location at the Shoppes at West Village on Electric Road in Roanoke County, Elder said.

This will be the second Roanoke Valley business to expand onto Roanoke's campus this year. In January, CUPS, a coffee shop on Grandin Road in Roanoke, opened a small location inside the College's Fintel Library.

Elderberry's opened its approximately 300-to-400-square-foot downtown Salem shop in 2009, and more recently, the business has been looking for a place to expand.

Moving to a College-owned storefront made sense, Elder said, considering that business from the College's students, faculty and staff comprises a large portion of Elderberry's Salem clientele.?

Elder said she expects to hire Roanoke College students to work at the new Elderberry's. She also wants to promote the shop as a teaching ground for students interested in pursuing business careers.

For the College, Elderberry's is a welcome addition to campus.

"Elderberry's has always been a favorite of RC students and now with the closer College Avenue location, will fill the College's need for an eating venue on that end of campus," said Larry Walker, manager of planning and projects for Roanoke.?"The expanded seating of the larger location will enable Elderberry's to better serve both the student population and Salem residents."

Roanoke College, a classic liberal arts college in Salem, Virginia, combines firsthand learning with valuable personal connections in a beautiful, undergraduate setting. Roanoke is one of just seven percent of colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society. The Princeton Review lists Roanoke as the 18th most beautiful campus in its "Best 376 Colleges" 2012 guidebook.

Insight: Libya's turmoil revealed in feud for custody of Gaddafi's son

By Marie-Louise Gumuchian

ZINTAN, Libya (Reuters) - To his captors, the fate of Libya's most prominent prisoner, the son of ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi, can be sealed only in one place - in the small straggling mountain town where they have kept him locked up for nearly two years.

The prize of former rebel fighters who triumphed in catching him as he tried to flee the country, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi is being kept in a secret location somewhere among Zintan's sandstone and concrete buildings.

The one-time heir apparent remains out of reach of the government in Tripoli and even further from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, which also wants to try him. His captors, distrustful of a government they say is failing the state, say any tribunal he will face should be in Zintan.

If the country's leaders do not hold a trial soon over crimes committed before and during the 2011 uprising that toppled his father, they will do so themselves, they say.

"If there is no trial for him, the Libyan people will bring him to justice," said Alajmi Ali Ahmed al-Atiri, the man who led the patrol that caught Saif al-Islam in the Sahara desert.

"We will give the Libyan government a chance to bring him to trial. If they delay it, frankly we will say that we, as Libyan revolutionaries, will bring Saif to the revolutionary court. It will be a public and just trial."

Such declarations highlight the limited power the central government has on the fighters who chased out Gaddafi and now believe they deserve to be the real beneficiaries of the 2011 uprising.

Zintan, a dusty Arab garrison town sprawled atop a steep-walled plateau in the mainly ethnic Berber Western Mountains, played an outsized role in the 2011 war. Two years ago, its fighters came down from the highlands, broke Gaddafi's defenses along the coast and led the charge into Tripoli.

Today, they remain organized and contemptuous of a central administration that, faced with assassinations, attacks on national and Western targets and a mass jail break, is losing its grip over the oil-producing state.

Tripoli is already involved in a legal dispute with The Hague, which is seeking Saif al-Islam for war crimes. But the real tussle is at home, where the government has unsuccessfully tried to move him to a specially-built jail in the capital.

His impending trial, whenever and wherever it may be, will be emblematic of who has the real power on the ground - the frontline rebels who fought Gaddafi's forces or Tripoli's politicians, who already face increasing popular discontent.

"The ball is now in the government's court and the government is very fragile - it is probably going through its most fragile phase ever in this transition," Human Rights Watch Libya researcher Hanan Salah said.

"This is a case of one very prominent detainee but think about the so many more detainees being held by other militias that are given some sort of legitimacy or not. It showcases where the country is at in this stage of its transition."

"MICKEY MOUSE TRIALS"

Zintan fighters caught Saif al-Islam in the southern desert, a month after his father was captured alive, battered to death by a lynch mob and displayed in a meat locker. The son was flown back to Zintan and many say treated ever since as the town's trophy and a bargaining chip for influence and power.

With a photographer and a cameraman, I was the only reporter on the plane that brought him to Zintan in 2011. Wrapped in a Bedouin turban and cloak, the former heir apparent, known for his dapper suits and PhD from the London School of Economics, was lost in thought, occasionally chatting with his captors.

His right hand was bandaged and missing three fingers. He said they were blown off in battle. Many Libyans assume his captors chopped them off, including the index finger he wagged at the camera in a notorious televised speech at the uprising's start, when he promised his father's foes "rivers of blood".

Saif al-Islam, 41, has already appeared in court in Zintan on separate charges that he gave information threatening national security to an Australian ICC lawyer last year.

Melinda Taylor, appointed by the ICC to act as his defense lawyer, was herself detained in Zintan for three weeks after her meeting with him. She has said her detention proved he could not get a fair trial in Libya.

For Libyans with years of pent up anger, Saif al-Islam and former spy chief Abdallah al-Senussi, in a Tripoli jail, are the most important faces of the Gaddafi government they can hold accountable for 42 years of dictatorship.

The men in Zintan, a town that prides itself on a history of martial prowess far beyond its modest size, say they are doing their national duty by keeping Saif al-Islam safe from harm.

"There is no reason to transfer him to Tripoli. Zintan is a Libyan town and there needs to be a secure place for the trial. We have good judges," Atiri said.

"We will ask Libyans who may have any problems with Saif or any accusation, as well as anyone who wants to defend Saif, to be at this court. If we find him guilty, he will be punished, if we find he is innocent, he will choose his life."

In June, the prosecutor general's office said one major trial involving Saif al-Islam, Senussi and other Gaddafi-era officials would begin in the first half of August.

It is not clear whether the trial will indeed go ahead soon, or where it would be held. Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani, whose ministry has previously been stormed by angry armed groups, says he will not stand for "Mickey Mouse trials".

"He will be tried where the court is sitting. We have most of the accused in Tripoli so it could well be Tripoli or any other place," Marghani told Reuters. "There will be proper trials and when we say proper, we mean proper."

On Wednesday, a court in Misrata, another city at the forefront of the revolt, sentenced former Gaddafi-era Education Minister Ahmed Ibrahim to death for inciting violence during the uprising, the first such sentence handed down. The supreme court must confirm it before the execution can be carried out.

Human rights activists fret that the government's weakness and the shakiness of rule of law mean that proceedings will fall short of international standards. The government is still trying to take control of prisons where thousands of detainees have languished for two years without trial. Investigations are slow, prosecutors scarce and willing defense lawyers even scarcer.

IMPATIENCE

Armed groups, distrustful of a judiciary they view as a relic of dictatorship, often enforce their own justice, holding prisoners in jails out of reach of the state.

"Impatience with the pace of justice and overall mistrust embolden armed groups," International Crisis Group wrote in a report April. "Their increased activism undermines the state's ability to function, including on matters of law and order; and this in turn vindicated the armed group's claim that it is their duty to fill the vacuum."

Saif al-Islam, who was seen as the business-friendly face of Libya in the years when his father achieved rapprochement with Western powers, is not the only prisoner in Zintan. A former school library has been turned into a jail, where Gaddafi-era field commanders and officials are held.

"All Zintani prisoners have rooms with air conditioning, they have a television, they go outside in the sun, they have time for reading, they get religious lectures," Atiri said, adding prison literature was usually religious-themed.

Saif al-Islam was "just like any other any other prisoner", he said. His health is fine and he receives monthly medical checks. "He is talking, he has good relationship with his guards," he said. Asked if Saif al-Islam was alone, Atiri would not answer: "The main thing is that he is in prison."

Residents complain that the town of 35,000 people, made up of modest one-storey houses and where bins placed in the middle of roads act as speed bumps, is being neglected.

"After two years, nothing has been achieved - we have a lack of drinking water, poor communications, an old hospital and buildings. The only thing we have is security," Mohammed Ali Wakwak, head of the Zintan local council, said. "The government promises a lot but nothing has been done. Of course we are patient, we want to give the government a chance but the situation now is very serious."

If the government was serious about trying Saif al-Islam, it should build a proper court in Zintan, he said.

Feds, states want Apple to revamp e-book practices

Published: Sat, August 3, 2013 @ 12:00 a.m.

Associated Press

NEW YORK

The Justice Department and 33 state attorneys general said Friday they want to prevent Apple from entering into contracts with sellers of e-books, movies, music and other digital content that are likely to raise prices.

The demand comes out of an antitrust suit against Apple Inc. and five e-book publishers. A federal judge ruled last month that Apple had colluded with the publishers to raise e-book prices.

The Cupertino, Calif., company has denied wrongdoing and has said it will appeal the decision. On Friday, it called the remedy proposal ?a draconian and punitive intrusion into Apple?s business.? The inclusion of digital media other than books in the proposal doesn?t bear any relation to the findings in the case, Apple said.

The book publishers previously settled the price-fixing charges. They are Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Holtzbrinck Publishers, doing business as Macmillan, and The Penguin Publishing Co. Ltd., doing business as Penguin Group. The settlements were designed to encourage price competition and discounting, but that hasn?t happened.

The government alleged that the publishers colluded with Apple to move the e-book industry away from the wholesale model employed by Amazon.com Inc., which had unnerved publishers by selling e-book versions of popular hardcover titles for as little as $9.99 before the April 2010 release of Apple?s iPad. Under its contracts with publishers, Amazon was free to sell books at any price it wanted.

Apple instead adopted the ?agency? model, under which publishers set the retail price, and the store takes a cut. Under that model, the store can?t discount a book. That pressured Amazon into accepting the agency model, the government alleged.

The government wants Apple to agree to sign new contracts with the publishers that aren?t likely to raise prices. In its response Friday, Apple said the government?s proposed remedy is unnecessary, since the publishers already are signing new wholesale contracts.

In her ruling in July, the judge said the conspiracy harmed consumers in numerous ways. Some had to pay more for e-books, she said. Others bought cheaper e-books rather than the ones they preferred to purchase and others deferred purchases altogether rather than pay higher prices.

The settlements with the publishers removed the shackles that prevented Amazon from discounting, but the $9.99 price for e-books that publishers dreaded has become increasingly rare.

The Justice Department and the attorneys general also want Apple to allow rival e-book sellers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble Inc. to provide links inside their iPhone and iPad apps to their own bookstores.

Apple allows Amazon and Barnes & Noble?s apps to load books that already have been purchased, but doesn?t allow the apps to sell books or link to online bookstores.

IT IS BIG BROTHER'S TURN IN THE CAN-AM SPOTLIGHT; ALSO, LEARNING ABOUT THIS 'FRATERNITY' CALLED BASEBALL

When I spent a day with the Rockland (NY) Boulders earlier this season the talk was centered around Chris Edmondson because he was making an early run with Triple Crown-like numbers against Can-Am League pitching.

Older brother Jerod, also an outfielder, could easily have gotten lost in the glare of Chris?s accomplishments. That is what made it so sweet when Jerod Edmondson went on a offensive splurge of his own and won Rawlings Hitter of the Month honors for July.

Edmondson hit .380 with five homers, but he hit so much in the clutch, driving in 23 runs to grab a share of the league lead (51). He had 14 extra-base hits and went a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen bases.

Chris Edmondson had his contract purchased by Atlanta in June, but he has been limited to only 10 games (7-for-34, .206 with one homer) because of an injury and has spent more than three weeks on the disabled list.

BASEBALL ?LIKE A FRATERNITY?

St. Paul (MN) Saints newcomer Bryan Henry is writing a journal about his baseball days for Tallahassee.com, and if fans want a glimpse of how players adapt when they join a new team Harvey?s ?Life in the Minors? column helps out.

?The baseball world is a small one,? the onetime Florida State hurler wrote recently. ?It is a lot like a fraternity. It seems as if everyone is connected by past connections, a.k.a. the six degrees of separation syndrome. This team is no different.? He went on to discuss his personal or second-hand connections he learned about in chatting with his new mates.

Henry, 28 and fresh from seven years in the Arizona farm system, also talked about his perceptions and the realities of visiting new cities, such as his very first junket to North Dakota. He thought visiting Fargo might be much like scenes from the ?Field of Dreams? with ?farms, cornfields, crops in the middle of nowhere and then boom, a baseball field.?

The right-hander, who has had two stints in Triple-A and took a 30-26 career record to St. Paul, not only learned that the RedHawks have a nice stadium and playing surface, but ?the most surprising thing to me was the atmosphere at the game. There were more than 4,000 fans in attendance, and it was an intense game.?

As for his pitching for the Saints, Henry has a 1.68 earned run average after four relief outings although he has suffered one defeat.

FELIX PIE?S SPEED COULD HELP PITTSBURGH

While he did not make the team despite a long look in spring training, it would not be at all surprising to see former major league and Atlantic League (Camden, NJ) outfielder Felix Pie helping the surging Pittsburgh Pirates down the playoff stretch.

His speed alone could be enticing. Pie has 34 steals at Triple-A Indianapolis although his average has tailed off to .245.

Queens of the Stone Age Concert Review - Metro Lollapalooza Pre ...

Concert Review: Queens of the Stone Age (Lollapalooza Pre-Show - Thursday, August 1 at Metro)

Queens of the Stone Age kicked off Lollapalooza weekend a bit early with a special pre-show Thursday night at Metro...

"Rock is dead" has become the popular go-to of late, especially as one of the reasons when it comes to explaining declining album sales.

But following the June 4th release of their sixth studio album, ...Like Clockwork, Queens of the Stone Age debuted at number one on the Billboard albums chart selling a whopping 91,000 albums in an era where people don't buy them, knocking the ubiquitous Daft Punk from the number one perch in the process.

All of which places them as arguably one of the biggest rock bands in the land as they approach their Friday night slot as one of Lollapalooza's 2013 headliners... making their intimate Thursday night pre-show at Metro that much more special before Friday's victory lap in front of a few more people in Grant Park.

"We're always so happy to come to Chicago, an amazing city..." said frontman Josh Homme. ?"This is a wonderful place, the Metro... really f---ing cool."

From the get-go Thursday, the band plowed through an hour and forty-five minute set that focused largely on ...Like Clockwork and 2002's Songs for the Deaf (those two album comprised more than half the set).

Following a brief pause early on when the band just couldn't seem to get the guitars loud enough (Homme frequently motioned for more volume for both his and Troy Van Leeuwen's guitars), the band continued to deliver their unique sound virtually non-stop, a riff-heavy mix that includes elements of everything from metal to blues.

But the key throughout was the band's incredible ability to craft an indelible groove. ?That particular element of the band's arsenal was on full display often but most notably on a pair of new tracks: ?"If I had a Tail" and "Smooth Sailing."

The former, despite not even being one of ...Like Clockwork's singles (yet), was yelled for throughout the night and the crowd went ballistic when the band finally complied. ?Both of those tracks are indicative of the new album's biggest strength - a pop sensibility that's present under the sludge and had people dancing Thursday night.

Thursday night's crowd was great. ?Everyone was familiar with all of the material, well versed even in the new stuff... And for a band that's been around since the late nineties, you don't usually get that.

But it was the more rocking moments Thursday night that had the crowd in a frenzy - specifically a fantastic, blues drenched jam that allowed the band to stretch out during "Burn the Witch" and the pummeling one-two punch of "I Think I Lost my Headache" and "Go With the Flow" back-to-back.

Though the best was saved for last. ?"This song is the best way we know of saying thank you" said Homme as the band launched into a drawn out version of "A Song for the Dead." ?Each band member got their chance to shine within the song's nooks and crannies while the false stops and frenetic guitar attack gave the crowd every opportunity to thrash with reckless abandon.

I've never seen a Metro crowd empty out en masse the way this one did following "A Song for the Dead" - there was just clearly no way the band was coming back for another encore after their performance of that song.

Long considered the kings of stoner rock, it was a thrill to watch Queens of the Stone Age perform at the top of their powers as one of the biggest rock acts in the world Thursday night onstage at one of the smallest, warmest clubs in the city.

I joked on Facebook?before the show that Thursday's Queens of the Stone Age set at Metro had the potential to be the best thing we'd see all weekend... Now I'm thinking it might have been the best thing I'll see in 2013.

Nexus 7 (2013) Review: The Best 7" Android Tablet Ever, But Better

I like tablets, and I love tablet apps. Don?t take that the wrong way - I love my Nexus 4, and I use it constantly, but there?s something different about tablets. A large, beautiful screen filled by an app that really shows off the functionality that comes with Android's design language is a great experience. Make that tablet super portable, fast, and priced right, and you?ve got my heart.

Okay, maybe that?s not all it takes for a tablet to win my heart. It takes a little more. In reviewing the new Nexus 7 (hereafter referred to as NN7), I wanted to find out for myself if Google?s newest seven-inch tablet is one that could win my affection - and use - both as a consumer and as a tech journalist.

That?s a tall order, but I?ve spent some quality time with the NN7 and I?m ready to dive into my honest thoughts.

front

In a Nutshell

To put it plainly, the Nexus 7 is a great tablet. Its few shortcomings are far outweighed by its superlative display, great sound, and overall design. If you're in the market for a seven-inch tablet (regardless of price), this is the one you want.

Specs

  • 7.02" IPS display at 1920x1200 (that's 323 ppi)
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 5MP rear camera, 1.2MP front camera
  • 2GB RAM
  • Quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro
  • 16 or 32GB internal storage
  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
  • 3950mAh battery
  • Notification LED
  • Dual rear-facing speakers

Before diving in, here's a quick rundown of the Nexus 7's primary strengths and weaknesses.

The Good

  • The Display ? The Nexus 7 has a dazzling, sharp, contrasty, bright, all around great display. I love it. I haven't loved a mobile display like this since the Nexus 10.
  • The Sound ? Audio is produced at reasonably loud volumes with clarity and depth.
  • The Form Factor ? In my mind, this tablet is just the right size and shape for something under 10". It's big enough to be differentiated from my phone's display but small enough to hold comfortably and work quickly.
  • Performance ? I'm not a huge gamer, but the day-to-day tasks that I use the Nexus 7 for are executed masterfully, and Android is buttery-er than ever.

The Not So Good

  • Speaker Placement ? Going into my purchase I didn't think this would be a big deal, but the rear-facing speakers are kind of a sticking point. Sound is excellent, but I still feel compelled to hold my tablet in a way I wouldn't normally hold a rectangle so that I don't block the sound. And it is blockable.
  • Notification Light ? Having an LED notification light is actually a great thing, but with the new Nexus 7 there's a hitch ? it only seems to light up in one color. One of the things I love about the light on the N4 and N10 is that it is more functional and useful than a normal light, because different colors can alert you to different kinds of notifications.
  • No SD Card Slot ? This isn't a big deal for me personally, because I use very little local storage, but for a lot of people, the lack of SD support in Nexus devices continues to be problematic.

Closer Look

The Hardware (Outside)

The first thing anyone notices about a device is the hardware. The outside hardware, anyway. For the current Nexus line, the dominant visual feature is a black slab of glass. Shiny, elegant, and not just understated, but unstated altogether. Oh, and a notification light. The notification light is a good addition, but not as good as I'd hoped ? it appears to only light up white, making an app like Lightflow useless. This is problematic because while a notification LED is good, it isn't as good as it should be if it can't actually differentiate between types of notifications.

Knowing what kind of notification you have without turning anything on is a lot better than just knowing you have some kind of notification.

_DSC2906

Once you do turn it on, though, a bright, crisp, vivid, pixel-packed display will smack you in the eyeball. But more on that later.

But what about the reverse? The first thing you?ll notice about the NN7?s back side is that it has a soft touch coating that?s different from the old Nexus 7, the Nexus 4?s edge band, and the Nexus 10. If I had to draw a comparison to another existing Nexus though, I?d say the NN7 feels like a dry version of the Nexus 10. Still warm and comfortable, but just a teeny bit rougher. This is most likely due to the material the back is made of.

backmicro

The back also shows off a glossy inset Nexus logo situated horizontally if you hold the tablet in landscape mode, and an ASUS logo perpendicular to that along the bottom. You'll also find the tablet's dual stereo speakers and a 5MP camera, but we'll get to those soon enough.

The only physical buttons on the entire device are the power and volume keys. Strangely, these few buttons are kind of a problem area. They, like the Nexus logo on the back of the device, are glossy plastic, but the power button seems a little lopsided. From what I understand, I'm not alone in this experience. It's a minor quibble, but it doesn't bode well for the future of the button. Personally, I'd be fine if there were no buttons on the device whatsoever.

power

Overall the build quality feels pretty good. The more slender frame gives the Nexus 7 a more solid, weighty feel, even though the tablet weighs 50g less than its counterpart. The tablet, as I've said before, is also extremely easy to hold in one hand.

The Hardware (Inside)

Of course the most beautiful device is just as good as a really fancy paperweight if it doesn't actually perform. The Nexus 7, as detailed above, is packing 2GB RAM along with an S4 Pro chipset powered by a quad-core 1.5GHz Krait CPU and Adreno 320 GPU. (For a more graphic look at the NN7's insidey parts, check out iFixit's teardown).

It should be noted there has been some contention over the Nexus 7's SoC though ? according to AnandTech's mini-review, the NN7 sports DDR3 RAM and appears/behaves "more like an underclocked or lower binned Snapdragon 600."

Knowing all of this, the question has to be asked ? how does it perform? I won't spend time and space with a battery of benchmarks, but I will say that it shows solid performance. Granted I don't have a habit of playing games any more demanding than, say, Riptide GP2, but everything I do with the tablet is executed without effort, stutter, or the slightest hint of lag.

For those interested, we took a brief look at a couple of benchmarks shortly after the NN7's announcement.

The Display

This is probably my favorite part of the new Nexus 7. At 1920x1200, the display is no laughing matter ? Google touted it as the highest resolution seven inch display in existence.

_DSC2847

Whether or not you consider density to equal resolution, the display is impressive. It's a major improvement over the original Nexus 7 not just in terms of pixel density, but in color, contrast, and brightness as well ? the NN7 is capable of displaying a 30% wider range of color than its predecessor, and is very noticeably brighter and more contrasty when compared in real life.

To help you get an idea of just how much more densely-packed the display is, here's a quick comparison under the microscope:

image?image

Left: Nexus 7 2012 Right: New Nexus 7

The only issue I've noticed with the display might be a nocebo ? it seems like sometimes long press actions are very finicky, almost like the slightest wiggle of a finger might break the long press. Otherwise it's great.

The display has really driven home for me the idea that a seven-inch tablet is perhaps even more versatile than its 10" counterparts ? watching movies is a great experience, using apps, browsing the web, and passing emails are all pleasant, and ? here's where a 7" slate has the leg up ? reading is superb.

It's not that I hate reading on the Nexus 10 or other similarly sized tablets, it's just that a 7" tablet feels so much more? correct for the purpose. Maybe because it's closer to the size of an actual book.

Before I wax any further, let's move on to the speakers.

The Speakers

The NN7's speakers were one of the highlights of Sundar Pichai's breakfast get-together. Google was sure to point out that they worked with Fraunhofer to craft three-dimensional "surround sound" for the Nexus 7's dual speakers.

speaker

This sounds very fancy. While the sound on the NN7's speakers is good (comparable to the quality of the N10, plus some interesting effects that I might not necessarily describe as "surrounding" me), what we are essentially talking about is an added layer of software for digital audio processing that aims to make things sound better and more realistic.?

The one complaint I have with the speakers, as I pointed out in my initial hands-on, is that they are on the back right in the middle of the curve. When using the tablet in landscape mode I feel like I have to hold it a certain way, instead of just letting my hands cradle it naturally. That's not an ideal experience, whether the sound blockage is real or imagined.

The Camera

camera

The camera, in short, is not fantastic. It's decent, and it reminds me very much of the camera on the Nexus 4, but with a different resolution.

If your desire for a camera on your 7" tablet stems from the need to scan barcodes, you're all set. It handles regular photos pretty well too, if you're careful. Scenes with both bright and dark spots likely won't come out as even exposures, but if the scene you're looking to capture is well-lit, you've got nothing to worry about.

Personally the camera is a very small consideration for me, as I can count on one hand the number of times I've reached for my tablet specifically to take a photo.

IMG_20130802_182821IMG_20130802_181330?IMG_20130802_1820392IMG_20130802_190005

The front camera is precisely what you'd expect from a 1.2MP shooter. Passable for quick video calls, but don't expect to get a selfie printed at 11x14 for the mantle.

Video is much the same as still photography, but with motion and sound. The sound is kind of unpredictable, though. In the video sample below, listen carefully and you'll hear all kinds of weird blips and noises underlying the actual audio of the scene. In a scene that's not quite so quiet, this would likely be unnoticeable though.

Battery

The NN7 actually has a smaller battery capacity than the old Nexus 7 ? 3950 vs 4325mAh. Whether this decision was made to keep the NN7 svelte, or because Google took a very ambitious bet on Android 4.3's powers of battery preservation is unknown.

What I do know, however, is that the battery on the NN7 is decidedly decent. Though smaller than the old Nexus 7, and though it powers a dense display, the battery seems to last about a day and a half on a charge in my use case, or even longer if my use is lighter than normal. While I'm still waiting for that major shift in battery technology to bring me days and days of use, a couple of days on a charge is pretty good ? in recent memory, I haven't been away from a power outlet for more than a day.

The Nexus 7 is rated for 9 hours of "active use," but in my experience, streaming a half hour of video drained about 9% of the battery, putting its longevity at about five hours in that use case. Obviously when users are performing other tasks, the battery usage becomes a bit less formulaic.

When idle, as expected, the tablet will last much longer. Just how much longer is as yet unknown ? during my time reviewing the Nexus 7, I haven't left it alone long enough to get an accurate picture. That said, battery drain overnight is negligible.

Of course, your mileage may (and probably will) vary.

Charging

A lot of people were surprised to find out that the new Nexus 7 doesn't have pogo pins like the old one. Of course, the old Nexus 7 dock won't work with the NN7, but that's okay (right?) because it supports Qi wireless charging!

But um? don't plan on using the NN7 with the Nexus 4 charging orb without a slight hassle.

orb

While the device fits, it has to be in landscape orientation, and if you have any desire for the tablet to rest at a straight angle, you'll be fiddling with it for a while. The grippy ring on the orb is obviously meant for smoother surfaces ? it just doesn't hold as tightly to the textured back of the NN7.

If you don't mind all that, though, it'll certainly charge the device. I'm left wondering if Google plans to release a larger, perhaps grapefruit-sized charging orb (fingers crossed).

Android 4.3

_DSC2889-2

Since the NN7 is Android 4.3's launch device, it's worth taking a minute to look at the latest version bump. Probably the most important enhancement Google brought to Android in the latest release, as far as tablets like the NN7 are concerned, is restricted profiles. Basically this feature expands on existing multiuser functionality by opening up the possibility for restricted user profiles, whose access to apps, settings, or features can be limited.

This was an important move because it makes it far easier for parents to feel comfortable giving their child a tablet, or for anyone considering a tablet to share with the rest of the family. This, along with Google's moves to improve the Android tablet experience for education (both primary and beyond) will make the devices more appealing to new groups.

As Jeremiah rightly pointed out, restricted profiles really is the most user-facing new feature in 4.3, but other small tweaks, like the new Wi-Fi location scanning feature, Bluetooth Low Energy, and OpenGL ES 3.0 make the user experience better from behind the scenes.

While 4.3 isn't the dessert some may have been hoping for, it's definitely a respectable OS bump and does add to Android's overall experience.

The Content Elephant in the Room

Something that most outlets love to hate about Android tablets is the lack of specifically tablet-friendly apps.

It is true that my mind is not boggled by the number or quality of tablet oriented, optimized, or even compatible apps, but maybe we're looking for the wrong thing.

Matias Duarte, in an interview with the Verge following the introduction of the original Nexus 7, explained that experiences should be uniform but adaptive across screen sizes, using Twitter's iOS app as an example of how changing the experience between form factors has the potential to be disruptive to the user's overall experience with the product (and, if I may extrapolate, their experience of the brand).

Rather than searching high and low for apps that specifically call themselves out as being made for tablets, we should instead be looking at apps that adapt to the tablet screen. This means considering how to move away from large phone interfaces and toward something that provides the same experience at a different size. The Google+ app is a great example of this, across phones, 7" tablets, and 10" tablets.

I think the other thing to consider is what you'll be doing on the tablet. Besides apps and games, a huge portion of my time with the Nexus 7 is spent consuming media, be it music, movies, tv, or other videos.

Media content is an area where the Play Store has really grown up fast lately, and while it still has some catching up to do, you will absolutely not be at a loss for content on the new Nexus 7.

Conclusion

In the end, is the Nexus 7 worth its $229 price of entry? In my opinion, it absolutely is.

If you're in the market for a seven-inch slate, or if you're just looking for an all-around great tablet, the Nexus 7 won't disappoint. It's got a sharp design, a great display, and it runs like a champ. In pretty much every category, it beats the seven-inch Google-branded tablet that ? at the time ? beat all other Android tablets.

As I said earlier, its few shortcomings are far outweighed by its strengths, and a low price point doesn't hurt it, either.

Edward Snowden Offered Job with Russian Facebook

The founder of Russian Facebook-rival VK has extended a job offer to NSA-whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Writing on his personal VK page, Pavel Durov said he was proud to be Russian following his government's decision to grant Snowden temporary asylum and invited the former NSA analyst to join his team.

Durov said he would be "happy for [Snowden] to join a stellar team of programmers" in VK's St. Petersburg office.

He added that Snowden may be interested in using the skills acquired at the National Security Agency to help protect VK's users: "In the end there is no more popular European company than VK. I think Edward might be interesting [in doing] protection of personal data for our millions of users."

Particularly strong

VK - previously known as VK or ????????? in Russian - is the second most popular social network in Europe, with a particularly strong following in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. It has around 200 million accounts and 45 million average daily users - compared to over one billion accounts and 665 million daily users.

It offers very similar functionality to Facebook with its core functionality including photo sharing, private messaging, status updates and news sharing.

The 28-year-old Durov, who founded the site in 2006 with his matematician brother Nikolai, has been compared to Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and is known for his outspoken left-wing political and economic views. He is estimated to have a personal fortune of ?170 million, which is some way short of his US counterpart Zuckerberg who has an estimated personal wealth north of ?11 billion.

Undisclosed

Snowden was granted temporary political asylum by Russian president Vladimir Putin on Thursday on the understanding that he cease leaking top secret US government documents. Snowden, who had been living in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport for the past six weeks, left in a taxi to an undisclosed location.

While the temporary visa Snowden was granted only allows him to stay in the country for a year, comments from his legal representative Anatoly Kucherena suggest Snowden was looking to make Russia his long term home - and if that's the case he will need employment.

While working on a social network is not something to be found on Snowden's CV, it would be a major coup for VK to get Snowden on board, and help grow its profile outside of its stronghold of Eastern Europe.

VIDEO PREMIERE: Small Reactions ? ?Michael J. Foxworthy?

? 1 August, 2013Posted in: Videos

Small Reactions - Michael J. FoxworthyYou can look at this as a matter of satiation and propulsion. After all, Small Reactions have completed work on their debut LP, Similar Phantoms, which we?ve eagerly been anticipating since February. But the band is still in the process of shopping it around to labels, which unfortunately means we might not be hearing the record anytime soon. Not wanting to leave their fans in a lurch or lose all sense of forward momentum, the group recently got together with Derek King of Rock and Egg Productions to put together a video for their infectious standalone single ?Michael J. Foxworthy.? And, man, are we ever stoked to be able to bring you the premiere this morning.

The video was shot at the Cottage, which doubles as the group?s home and practice space. It?s also where they recorded the new album with producer Luciano Giarrano. For the most part, it?s a classic performance piece with lots of quick cuts of the band rocking out. But the production?s aged low budget look and off-the-cuff feel provide it with an interesting twist. According to drummer Sean Zearfoss, the video ?is designed to look like something from an old CCTV type of thing, a pirated public access channel or something crazy like that.? It?s a lot of fun, and a nice appetizer to chew on while we wait for Similar Phantoms to finally drop. Watch it below.

Small Reactions will perform on August 24 at Jortsfest along with Gold-Bears, Duende, Champagne Room and many others. Doors open at 4:30pm. Admission is FREE.
