Elderberry?s to relocate to Roanoke College campus

Salem - A Salem restaurant will relocate next month to Roanoke College's campus in a move that will more than triple the size of its smoothie, soup and sandwich footprint.

Elderberry's, which also has a restaurant in Roanoke County, plans to shift its Salem shop at 304 E. Main St., across the street to an approximately 1,600-square-foot College-owned space at 13 and 15 N. College Aves. The future Elderberry's space last housed temporary classrooms in 2009 during Roanoke's Lucas Hall renovation.

Elderberry's will open in its new space in mid-August for a soft opening, said Diane Elder, co-owner of the business. The shop will debut in time for the Aug. 28 start of daytime fall classes at Roanoke.

The new space will feature a larger dining area, a conference room and additional soup, sandwich and smoothie options. It will resemble the design and menu offerings at the Elderberry's flagship location at the Shoppes at West Village on Electric Road in Roanoke County, Elder said.

This will be the second Roanoke Valley business to expand onto Roanoke's campus this year. In January, CUPS, a coffee shop on Grandin Road in Roanoke, opened a small location inside the College's Fintel Library.

Elderberry's opened its approximately 300-to-400-square-foot downtown Salem shop in 2009, and more recently, the business has been looking for a place to expand.

Moving to a College-owned storefront made sense, Elder said, considering that business from the College's students, faculty and staff comprises a large portion of Elderberry's Salem clientele.?

Elder said she expects to hire Roanoke College students to work at the new Elderberry's. She also wants to promote the shop as a teaching ground for students interested in pursuing business careers.

For the College, Elderberry's is a welcome addition to campus.

"Elderberry's has always been a favorite of RC students and now with the closer College Avenue location, will fill the College's need for an eating venue on that end of campus," said Larry Walker, manager of planning and projects for Roanoke.?"The expanded seating of the larger location will enable Elderberry's to better serve both the student population and Salem residents."

Roanoke College, a classic liberal arts college in Salem, Virginia, combines firsthand learning with valuable personal connections in a beautiful, undergraduate setting. Roanoke is one of just seven percent of colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society. The Princeton Review lists Roanoke as the 18th most beautiful campus in its "Best 376 Colleges" 2012 guidebook.
