Auto Repair Police investigate auto repair scam in Boulder - World ...

On July 16, the suspect approached a woman at her home in north Boulder, and offered to do some body work on her van. She agreed to pay the man $220.

Police are investigating an auto repair scam in Boulder, after a man offering cheap and on-the-spot repairs allegedly cheated two women out of more than $600.

County Court Judge Mary Celeste is under investigation after police found a young child left alone locked in her car on Wednesday at a Sams Club parking lot, 9Wants to Know has learned.

The man applied wax to the dent and used what appeared to be vegetable oil to wipe down the exterior and interior of the SUV to make it look shiny.

When she removed the wax, the woman found more than 60 new dents around the original. The cost of the damage was estimated at $1,250.

The cost to repair the damage was estimated at $350.

Police say he may be driving a small, teal truck with a sign that reads, All Tech Auto Body, 720-422-6332. The license plate number is 166-RTV.

The man said he applied a wax to the womans van and told her not to remove it until the next day. When the woman removed the wax, she discovered that it had done more damage to the van and called police.

Late stab at debt-limit deal to avert US default (AP)

WASHINGTON ? After weeks of intense partisanship, the White House and congressional leaders made a desperate, last-minute stab at compromise Saturday to avoid the government default threatened for early next week. "There is very little time," declared President Barack Obama.

Obama met with top Democrats at the White House and spoke by phone with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

"He needs to indicate what he will sign, and we are in those discussions," McConnell said of the president. He added he had also spoken with Vice President Joe Biden, who played a prominent role in earlier attempts to break the gridlock that has pushed the country to the verge of an unprecedented default.

"We have until midnight," said Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid before leaving for the White House. That meeting lasted about 90 minutes. Reid's talk of a midnight deadline referred to the Senate's complicated rules, which can require multiple votes over several days to pass legislation.

The president is seeking an agreement to raise the government's $14.3 trillion debt limit by enough to tide the Treasury over until after the 2012 elections. He has threatened to veto any legislation that would allow a recurrence of the current crisis before early 2013 but has agreed to Republican demands that deficits be cut ? without tax increases ? in exchange for additional U.S. borrowing authority.

At a news conference in the Capitol, Speaker John Boehner said that despite the partisanship of recent weeks, "I think we're dealing with reasonable, responsible people who want this crisis to end as quickly as possible and I'm confident it will."

Halfway around the world, on a visit to Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan, the nation's top military officer fielded questions from troops asking if they would be paid in the event of a default.

"I actually don't know the answer to that question," said Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, although he told them they would continue to go to work each day.

Without a compromise in place by next Tuesday, administration officials say the Treasury will run out of funds to pay all the nation's bills. They say a subsequent default could prove catastrophic for the U.S. economy and send shockwaves around the world. With financial markets closed for the weekend, lawmakers had a little breathing room, but not much. Asian markets begin opening for the new work week when it is late Sunday afternoon in the capital.

To get to the endgame, Republicans and Democrats had to go through the formality of killing each other's bills ? scoring their own political points ? before they could turn to meaningful negotiations. Given all the acrimony, the shape of any deal was uncertain.

Still, the sudden talk of compromise contrasted sharply with the day's earlier developments as both the House and Senate convened for unusual Saturday sessions.

The House voted down legislation drafted by Democrat Reid to raise the government's debt limit by $2.4 trillion and cut spending by the same amount.

The vote was 246-173, mostly along party lines and after debate filled with harsh, partisan remarks .

Within minutes, White House officials disclosed the meeting with Reid and Pelosi.

Before the House vote, Republicans said the Reid spending-cuts plan was filled with gimmicks and would make unacceptable reductions in Pentagon accounts. "It offers no real solutions to the out-of-control spending problems," said Rep. Alan Nunnelee of Mississippi, part of a group of 87 first-term Republicans who have led the push for deeper spending cuts.

Not even Democrats seemed to like the legislation very much, although many emerged from a closed-door meeting of the rank and file saying they would vote for it.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, called it "the least worst alternative to avoid default."

Yet with their votes, many Democrats signaled their readiness for compromise by voting to cut spending without raising taxes. Many Republicans insist taxes must not be raised to cut into federal deficits, even for the wealthiest Americans and for big oil companies.

In remarks on the House floor, Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif., said the vote itself could be prelude to a final effort at compromise that would involve the White House and the leaders of both parties.

Across the Capitol, the Senate marked the hours before a scheduled test vote at 1 a.m. Sunday on the same measure.

There was no doubt about the outcome there, either, unless compromise intervened.

A total of 43 Republicans sent Reid a letter saying they would block the bill from advancing, enough to prevail.

With both parties' preferred solutions blocked, the only alternatives were compromise that was so far elusive or a default that no one claimed to want.

The day's events in the House were orchestrated as political payback, and unusual at that, since Republicans lined up to kill legislation that hadn't even cleared the Senate.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Reid had engineered the demise of a House-passed bill hours after it passed, and without so much as a debate on its merit.

Saturday's proceedings in the House were particularly partisan.

Pelosi said Boehner "chose to go to the dark side" when he changed his own legislation to satisfy tea party lawmakers and other critics.

There were catcalls from the Republican side of the aisle at that, and Pelosi responded by repeating that the speaker "chose to go to the dark side."

Republicans ridiculed Reid's legislation.

"Not only does it fail to address our spending and debt problem, it won't even prevent a downgrade of our credit rating," said Rep. Scott Garrett, R-N.J. "We need actual cuts to government spending to address our long-term debt crisis, not phantom cuts and accounting gimmicks."

Only 24 hours earlier, the House measure squeaked through on a 218-210 vote, with 22 Republicans joining united Democrats in opposing the GOP bill. It paired an immediate $900 billion increase in U.S. borrowing authority with $917 billion in spending cuts spread over the coming decade.

While Republicans said it marked the second time the House passed legislation to raise the debt limit ? compared to none for the Senate ? they also acknowledged Boehner's leverage had been diluted.

He had hoped to pass the bill on Thursday but was forced into a postponement because of objections from tea party-backed conservatives and other critics.

To win their votes, he was forced to add a provision that would require Congress to approve a constitutional balanced budget amendment as a condition for an additional debt limit increase after the initial $900 billion installment.

In addition to driving away some of Boehner's own Republicans, that inflamed Democrats, who seized on it as a surrender to parts of his rank and file who refuse to compromise.

Over 250 gymnasts from 10 clubs will compete in the three-day event which is always popular with spectators due to the high level of creativity on display. Routines usually combine elements of traditional aerobics, sports acrobatics and rhythmic gymnastics with music, dance and choreography.

Australia has always performed strongly in this discipline on the international stage having produced several world medallists since the Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships commenced in 1995.

Kym Dowdell, Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer said the two-day State Championship event promises to be a great showcase of the state?s most elite gymnasts in this discipline.

?The gymnasts will have a chance to compete against their counterparts from clubs across Queensland and the competition promises to be tough this year,? said Ms Dowdell.

?These events provide an excellent opportunity for those interested in gymnastics to see some of our finest competitors perform complex routines which demonstrate perfect integration of movement, music and expression.?

Outdoor Weddings

There can be any number of areas that one may wish to illuminate when a wedding occurs out of doors. For the most part, however, the idea is to ensure light during the evening feasting, which can occur under a canopy or even under the stars, if the couple are particularly blessed by good weather. While spotlights are possible, fairly lights have a simplicity that many consider romantic.

Take, for example, a beach wedding where the general wedding perimeter must be marked off by stringed fairly lights, perhaps coloured white, creating a sparkling diamond effect all around with the star studded sky in the background. A more elaborate lighting set up could see icicle or curtain lights hanging around the perimeter, giving the area a more intimate feel.

Of course, one does not have to be on a beach to enjoy that lighting effect, with a wedding dinner in the garden of ones own home perfectly suited also.

Marquee ?Lighting

A marquee is the quintessential reception facility for a wedding that wants to retain a touch of freshness about it. They are commonly used by hotels and home owners who want to offer guests greater freedom, allowing them to enjoy the fresh air and sunny weather more.

Once the sun goes down, however, the party does not have to end and, with the right lighting, can be enhanced. Both net and curtain fairy lights are suitable in this situation, with some event organisers happy to use the either as a backdrop behind the head table, where the newly married couple sit. Often, given the occasion, clear or white led lights are favoured.

Also suitable for the marquee, both inside and out, are string fairy lights, which can run either around the walls, or can stretch across the roof interior, from wall to wall, usually running among the natural creases of the canvas roof as it is held up with poles.

Table Lighting

One does not have to go to such extremes as illuminating a ceiling, walls or beach perimeter. Fairly lights can be hugely effective as part of simple table decorations. The centre pieces on the tables where the guests sit can be tastefully lit up by starlights or micro led lights, both of which are tiny in appearance but bright.

These lights can be wrapped around the central floral display, perhaps even around a candle. And because led lights are cool to the touch, there is no risk to the safety of the guests, as there is no chance of any heat causing a napkin or name card igniting.

Another table lighting idea is to use net lights as a part of a larger central table decoration. Again, because the led bulbs remain cool, they can be placed under a light table cloth, allowing the illumination from beneath the cloth to create a stunning effect, under the cake or a display area. They can even lie on dining tables themselves, if they can accommodate a net of the size of 1.5 x 2 metres.

The right lights can create a magical effect to benefit any reception venue, whether indoor or outdoor. There are many options when it comes to wedding lights, from string and icicle lights to net and curtain lights, and a combination of some or all of them. Whatever the desired effect, there are certain to be fairly lights to create it.

In working with small business owners, I have heard countless stories of bad landlords, office buildings that are not secure, flooding problems, rent costs above market value, and so forth.

Negotiating for commercial space can be intimidating, especially when the availability of commercial property is limited. however, the business owner needs to take control of the negotiation, even to the point of being willing to walk away from the property and the negotiations. like negotiating the price of a house before purchasing, ask for what you want with the commercial space. The worst that could happen is the other side will say no.

Democrat Rep. David Wu to resign amid allegations (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Democratic Rep. David Wu of Oregon announced Tuesday that he will resign amid the political fallout from an 18-year-old woman's allegations of an unwanted sexual encounter with him.

Wu had already said that he would not seek re-election, but he had come under increasing pressure to step down. Shortly after the allegations broke, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi requested a House Ethics Committee investigation of his conduct.

"The well-being of my children must come before anything else," Wu said in a statement. "With great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis. This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House and my colleagues."

Wu is the second House Democrat in the last six weeks to be forced to resign following allegations of sexual misconduct. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York resigned after sending lewd photos of himself through Twitter. Wu faced allegations in his 2004 campaign that he had sexually assaulted a former girlfriend when they were students at Stanford University in the 1970s

Wu, a Yale-educated lawyer, was elected to Congress in 1998 as the first Chinese-American to serve in the House. He's maintained a centrist voting record but has been a leading voice on human rights abuses in China. He angered the high-tech firms in his district when he voted against normalizing trade relations with China.

Wu's hometown newspaper, the Oregonian, reported on Friday night that a California woman had called Wu's office in Portland and reported an unwanted sexual encounter with him around Thanksgiving. The paper also reported that Wu told senior aides the sexual encounter was consensual.

The newspaper said the woman decided not to press charges because there were no witnesses and it would have been her word against Wu's.

Wu has consistently won re-election with ease, but he was already facing the prospects of a difficult campaign even before the latest scandal broke. In January seven staffers resigned because of behavior that included sending a photo of himself in a tiger costume to a staff member and an angry public speech. Wu attributed those to a period of mental health challenges that began in 2008 as marital issues led to a separation from his wife.

Democratic candidates who had already lined up to challenge Wu in the 2012 primary immediately called for Wu's resignation. On Capitol Hill, the pressure came behind the scenes, most notably from Oregon's two senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley. The chiefs of staff for the two lawmakers met with Wu's chief of staff early Tuesday and made clear that the two senators were going to call for his resignation publicly. Their joint statement went out about the same time that Wu's resignation did.

"While no one takes pleasure in asking a colleague to resign, we believe he can no longer be an effective representative for our shared constituents and should, in the best interest of Oregon, step down," the release stated.

Wu said he could not care for his family the way he wanted to while staying in Congress and fighting "these very serious allegations."

"It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be a United States congressman," Wu said in his resignation announcement. "Rare is the nation in which an immigrant child can become a national political figure. I thank God and my parents for the privilege of being an American."

Under state law, Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber sets the date for a special election. There is no provision for an interim appointment.

The governor has two options. He can schedule the election within 80 days of the resignation. If he does, the parties nominate candidates according to their internal rules, such as through a convention.

He can schedule the election for 80 days or longer beyond the date of resignation. In that case, there will also be a primary election to select candidates.

Press secretary Christine Miles said Tuesday that Kitzhaber and his staff were working on a date and trying to decide which option he'll choose.

Wu has a daughter, 11, and a son, 13. He is an attorney and received his law degree from Yale Law School.

Democratic officials predicted that they will have little trouble retaining the seat. Republicans have been silent on Wu and opted to spend their time and efforts on the debt ceiling debate.

"Congressman Wu's resignation is the right decision," said Rep. Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "A Democrat has held this seat in Congress since 1975, Sen. John Kerry won this district (as a presidential candidate) in 2004 and President Obama won this district with 63 percent in 2008."

While Democrats have had to deal with the distractions associated with Weiner and Wu over the past few weeks, Republicans have also had their share of sex scandals. In May, Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., resigned in the midst of a Senate Ethics Committee investigation that was looking into steps that he took to cover up an affair with a former member of his campaign staff. In February, Rep. Christopher Lee, R-N.Y., abruptly resigned after a gossip website reported that he had sent a shirtless photo of himself to a woman he met on Craigslist.

A good catch of rainbow trout is possible throughout the year in this otherwise premier kokanee salmon fishery in Colorado. The reservoir is ideal for ice fishing for rainbow and brown trout with lunkers reaching the 30 pound mark. From Denver, the lake is accessible from Highway 50 which runs along the length of the reservoir and follows the Gunnison River. Set amidst deep canyons, rocky cliffs, and beautiful mesas, the reservoir is visited by a million anglers throughout the year.

DILLON RESERVOIR Lake Dillon, also known as Dillon Reservoir is a fantastic sport fishing location in Summit County. The lake is situated at the junction of the Blue River, Snake River, and Tenmile Creek near the picturesque town of Dillon, making it the largest lake in the Denver Water System. For anglers, rainbow and brown trout are available in plentiful along with a healthy population of Kokanee salmon. Fly fishermen as well as ice anglers have the best fishing opportunities during the respective seasons. The Dillon Marina is accessible from Highway 6. Anglers heading from Denver can take Interstate 70 via the Eisenhower Tunnel to Dillon.

The lake provides water for the Navajo Indian Reservation and is a hunting ground for trout in the cooler, deeper waters. Northern pike are available for anglers looking for a bigger catch along with large and smallmouth bass, catfish, and a variety of pan fish along all the 35 mile length of the reservoir. The lake never freezes in winter therefore there are no opportunities for ice fishing. The lake can be accessed from Highway 151 from County Road 982. Entry to the waters in New Mexico will require anglers to obtain another fishing license.

PEARL LAKE STATE PARK Amidst the pine-covered hills and rock peaks in northwestern Colorado lies Pearl Lake State Park and its main attraction, Pearl Lake. The lake is a peaceful haven for fishermen and one of Colorado?s best cold-water fisheries. The north end of the lake is the perfect spot for trophy cutthroat trout along the Lester Creek inlet at the northern end of the lake. The 167-acre lake is open to fishing throughout the year although May and fall are considered the peak seasons. According to rules, only flies and artificial lures are allowed, with a two-fish bag limit over 18 inches. Only wakeless gas or electric powered boats are permitted from the public ramp along the lake?s western shore. To reach the lake you can use Highway 40 from Steamboat Springs and head down County Road 129, turning north onto Pearl Lake Road.

RUNYON LAKE Formerly known as Fountain Lake, Runyon Lake is an exclusive fishing zone fed by the Arkansas River in Pueblo, Colorado. The lake was converted from a dredge pond used by the Rocky Mountain Steel Mill. The lake is well stocked with a variety of fish including channel catfish, rainbow trout, saugers, and crappie. Runyon Lake could reward anglers with a trophy catfish since it holds the record for the biggest catfish weighing 29.5 pounds and 38.5 inches in length. No boating is allowed at Runyon Lake, providing anglers with the much needed tranquility. The lake is accessible from Pueblo via Interstate 25 onto Highway 98A, and then south from Santa Fe to Runyon Field.

TRAPPERS LAKE Nestled in the majestic settings of volcanic cliffs inside the Flat Tops Wilderness is Colorado?s second largest natural water body, Trapper Lake. Surrounded by dense forests, the lake covers an area of 320 acres with a maximum depth of 180 feet. Native Colorado River cutthroat trout are well stocked in the pristine water of Trappers Lake. Anglers are allowed to use only artificial flies and lures with a bag limit of 2 cutthroat of 10 inches or less. A large part of the lake is in remote areas where only hand or foot powered boats are allowed. Getting to the lake is easy from Meeker along Highway 13 and onto County Road 8 for 39 miles before turning onto Trappers Lake Road. Three parking lots provide access to the lake.
BARR LAKE Although Barr Lake is well known for bird-watching, the lake provides anglers great opportunities for a good catch of multiple species of fish including trout, pike, rainbow trout, channel catfish, small and largemouth bass, walleye, and tiger muskie. The southern end of the lake is closed to fishing or boating since it is shallow, protecting its wildlife habitat at the same time. ?At the northern end of the lake, only sailboats, hand-propelled boats, gasoline powered motors 10 horsepower or less, and electric motor boats are permitted. To reach the lake from Denver you need to ravel north on Interstate 76 to Bromley Lane, then onto Picadilly Road, which leads to the Barr Lake State Park entrance

As a casualty of my divorce, I no longer own a house or hold any stock market assets. So paying for my kids' college educations has become both my most extravagant form of "consumption" and my greatest "investment."

Yet I've decided that's exactly as it should be.

My oldest daughter will enter her sophomore year at Princeton University this fall, while my second daughter starts at Sarah Lawrence College. These are two of the priciest institutions in the country; in fact, with an annual cost in the high $50,000s, Sarah Lawrence had the honor of being the single most expensive higher education institution on last year's College Board list. Princeton is not much cheaper, with an annual cost in the low $50,000s.

I'm very grateful that both of my girls received generous financial aid from their schools. Still, this has not turned out to be the "good bargain," in-state, public college route I had expected my kids would take when I made the decision to settle in northern Virginia when they were just babies.

But despite a relatively high price tag on Princeton, Kiplinger labels it the No. 1 "best value" of all private universities in the country, based on academic quality and affordability.

Sarah Lawrence doesn't make Kiplinger's liberal arts list (it doesn't show up on many college rankings) because its admissions process doesn't consider standardized test scores ? a common metric of student "quality."

For both of my daughters, I think their college educations ? despite the high costs ? will turn out to be a good deal for our family because they'll deliver high benefits, too.

Evaluated on a purely pecuniary basis by the Brookings Institution's Michael Greenstone and Adam Looney, the benefits of a four-year college degree are equivalent, on average, to an investment that returns 15.2 percent per year. The payoff on a lifetime-earnings basis is even more impressive: The average college grad earns about $570,000 more than the average high school (only) grad. That implies a more than 5-to-1 return from the average $102,000 cost of the college degree.

At schools like Princeton and Sarah Lawrence, the full costs are more than double that, but I'm betting that the payoff is probably much larger as well. At Princeton, the benefits of Ivy League "branding" and the social networking that lingers well into one's career are said to boost the lifetime earnings of their grads. At Sarah Lawrence, broader human qualities ? such as the ability to notice keenly, reflect deeply, relate sympathetically, and therefore act and react intelligently ? are well cultivated in the intensely interactive mentoring environment of a 9-to-1 student-teacher ratio.

And investment goals aside, what we buy in a college education is a lot of consumption, too. Many of our kids will enjoy a higher standard of living and "life experience" in college than they had at home or could experience anywhere else ? ranging from the richness of extracurricular activities and the "college lifestyle" in general to the little details like gourmet-quality dorm food or "free" and readily available transportation.

Parents like me may get stressed out about our big college bills. We should relax and remind ourselves that it's hard to imagine a better way for us to spend our money.

Get Your Home Ready for Spring: Make Every Room Energy Efficient

?Spring has sprung? ?so the saying goes. To me, this means beautiful weather and finally being able to be outdoors more. I?ve also noticed an influx of work trucks in my neighborhood. It looks like it?s also a time for home improvements. Lately, with so much emphasis on the importance of making your home energy efficient, I wondered where it is best to spend money ? making home improvements or making my home more energy efficient. I read that before remodeling a home, it?s good to consider investing in making it more energy efficient. This will help save on energy use and money over the long run. However, there?s no telling how long, the ?long run? will actually be. So, after doing some research, I found the best options ? saving on our energy usage AND saving money too! I divided them into five categories for the rooms that my family uses most:

1. Bedroom. Even though we?re asleep, most of the time we?re in the bedroom, it is still a very important room. During the hot months, many people crank down the air conditioner just so they can be comfortable when they sleep. This wastes a lot of energy which is reflected in increased energy bills. That is where the ceiling fan comes into play. Ceiling fans help circulate cool air in the summer by pushing cooled air downward, and then you can reverse the blade direction in the winter which pushes the cool air upward, to mix with the warm air. By doing this, you?re able to be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter while saving some energy. Plus, there are a number of models that look nice and can add a decorative touch to the room. In the summertime, just by using a ceiling fan, you can raise the thermostat around four degrees with no reduction in comfort. Quick energy saving tip: A ceiling fan cools people, not the room as it acts as a wind chill to cool the body, so leaving a fan on when out of the room does nothing but waste electricity. So, save more energy and remember to turn it (and any lights or electronics) off when leaving the room. Another easy improvement is with lighting. You may or may not know that there was a federal law that passed, which is phasing out incandescent bulbs. Starting in 2012, American manufacturers will no longer be allowed to make 100-watt bulbs and the light bulb as we know it will be replaced by compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and LEDs (light emitting diodes). So, knowing this now, could get you a head start on the movement. Yes, they don?t give off the best light, but according to the website, www.energysavers.gov, CFLs not only use about 75% less energy but they last up to 10 times longer than standard light bulbs.

2. Attic. If you?re looking for a home improvement that not only makes your home energy efficient, but you can see results instantly, then I recommend adding insulation. This project was done in our house and we saw savings on our next energy bill. Our home is older and required more insulation, so the amount of insulation needed and the energy savings you?ll see depends on how much insulation is already in your attic. Insulation helps save energy because it acts as a barrier that keeps heat in during the winter and keeps heat out during the summer. In order to maximize the efficiency of adding insulation, it?s best to air seal your attic to prevent air leaks first before adding the insulation. You can do this by caulking, sealing and weather stripping all seams, cracks and openings to the outside in your attic. The main sources of air leaks in your attic are around the chimney flashing, all ducts, the attic entrance, any recessed lighting and a dropped ceiling. Once the air leaks are filled, then it?s time to add the insulation. To determine if your home needs insulation, you can either hire a qualified home energy auditor who will do an entire home energy assessment for you or you can inspect it yourself. If you do decide to do the inspection yourself, you need to find out the following: A) where your home needs to be insulated, B) the thickness and the R-value of your current insulation and C) the type of insulation you already have. The R-value is a measurement for insulation?s resistance to heat flow and the higher the value the greater the effectiveness.

3. Kitchen. Some people consider the kitchen the ?heart? of a home. The problem is that it takes a lot of electricity to keep that ?heart? beating. So, an easy way to give your kitchen a facelift and make it energy efficient is to upgrade your appliances. For example, by replacing an older refrigerator with an Energy Star labeled model, you will use 40% less energy than conventional models sold in 2001 or earlier. Just think how nice your kitchen will look and how much energy (and money) you can save by replacing all your kitchen appliances with new Energy Star models. In addition to updating your appliances, you can also replace all lighting in the kitchen with CFL?s, which use less energy and create less heat, which is especially helpful when cooking during the hotter months. If you aren?t looking to upgrade your kitchen but are interested in ways to save energy and cut down on your energy bill, here are a few energy saving tips for the kitchen:
*Use pressure cookers or microwave ovens instead of the stove. They will save energy and reduce cooking time.
*If you do use the oven, try to cook several items at the same time. Also, don?t open the door to peek in; opening the door can lower the temperature inside up to 25 degrees.
*Only run a full dishwasher but be sure it?s not overloaded.
*Let your dishes air dry. There should be an automatic air-dry option but if not, then turn off the dishwasher after the final rinse and open the door to let the moisture escape.
*Allow foods to partially cool before putting them in the refrigerator since it takes more energy to cool hot food.

4. Living Room. When I think of the living room, the first things that come to mind are comfort and electronics (i.e., TV and music). So, an easy (but pricey) way to help with your energy bills is to upgrade your electronics, like your TV or sound system and make sure they are labeled, ?Energy Star?. This labeling helps reduce energy consumption without reducing the quality of the product. Quick energy saving tip: Remember to turn off lights and electronic devices when not in use. Contrary to what you might expect, even in stand-by mode those items still consume electricity unless they are completely shut off. If you are looking for less expensive options, just like in the bedroom, you can adopt the same tips for the living room as well. Use/install a ceiling fan and switch to CFL lighting. Whether you work from the home, are a stay-at-home parent, or at home for any reason during the day, you may find that you spend most of your time in the living room. So keep in mind these money savings tips in your living room. Also, it can be beneficial to update your windows and doors, not only in your living room, but in all rooms throughout your home. If you have older single pane windows, chances are you have leaks in them. This is a problem because air conditioned air is escaping through the leaks and outside air is coming in through them as well. A simple fix would be to replace those windows with new, double pane windows that are much more energy efficient and labeled ?Energy Star?. This method is costly, but they can add better curb appeal to your home plus can reduce air loss of up to 50%. Go to The U.S. Department of Energy?s website for information on how to choose the best window option for you. If replacing windows is not the option for you, then you can add caulk and/or a weather strip to reduce air leakage. Determine if there are air leaks entering your home by inspecting windows and/or doors to feel any air coming through. If there is, you can apply caulk to fill in the gaps. Lastly, if you do not have curtains or window coverings, it is a good idea to add them. By keeping them closed during the hottest part of the day, it will help block out the sun and keep your room cooler in the warmer months and they add a nice decorative touch.

Before I continue, I thought I?d point out that there is a 2011 tax credit for replacing windows, doors, insulation, and more with an Energy Star model. With this credit, you can get 10% of the cost of the new product, up to 0, or a specific amount from -0. This credit expires on December 31, 2011 and is only applicable for updates made to an existing home that is your primary residence. This does not apply to new construction or rental properties. Go to the Energy Star Tax Credit website for more information on this tax credit.

5. Garage. The garage is probably one of the last places people think to make improvements to or make energy efficient. What many people don?t realize is the garage (especially if it is attached to the home) can be one of the largest culprits of air loss in your home. One of the easiest ways to help prevent this loss is to add a weather strip to the bottom of the garage door and the door entering your home. This prevents the outside air from coming in and the air conditioned air from escaping ? and as a bonus ? it acts as a cushion for the garage door, which cuts down on noise when it closes. If you feel a breeze on the sides of the garage door, you can add weather stripping tape to seal the leaks. Now, if you?re looking to increase curb appeal or just tired of your garage door altogether (or if it?s old and falling apart), you can purchase an energy efficient garage door that will look better and prevent air from leaking. Another quick fix, just like throughout the rest of the house, is to replace the garage lighting with energy efficient CFL lights. Lastly, many people have a refrigerator or freezer in the garage for extra storage. This becomes a problem if you live in an area that has extreme high and low temperatures. Keeping the fridge/freezer at the proper temperature in extremely hot weather causes it to work harder. This is tough on the appliance AND it uses more energy, which costs you more money. So, if you are set on having another fridge or freezer in your garage, then think about replacing it with a model that is built garage-friendly and can withstand extreme temperatures.

Linda Christian, the first Bond girl, dies at 87 (AP)

PALM DESERT, Calif. ? Linda Christian, the Hollywood starlet of the 1940s who married heartthrob Tyrone Power and went on to become the first Bond girl, has died.

Her daughter, Romina Power, says Christian died Friday in Palm Desert after battling colon cancer. She was 87.

Born in Mexico, Christian pursued an acting career in Los Angeles and eventually signed a contract with MGM. She made her film debut alongside Danny Kaye in the 1944 musical comedy Up In Arms.

A year after appearing in 1948's Tarzan and the Mermaids, Christian married Power, one of Hollywood's most popular leading men. They divorced in 1956.

Christian's famous curves led Life magazine to nickname her the "anatomic bomb."

In 1954 she starred as James Bond's love interest in the television adaptation of the novel Casino Royale.

She is survived by Romina Power, her sister Taryn Power and eight grandchildren.

Smartphones May Be Taxing Your Eyes | Fitness and Health

THURSDAY, July 21 (HealthDay News) ? People reading text messages or browsing the Internet on their smartphones tend to hold the devices closer than they would a book or newspaper, forcing their eyes to work harder than usual, new research shows.

This closer distance ? plus the often tiny font sizes on smartphones ? could put added strain on people who already wear glasses or contact lenses, according to the study, which appears in the July issue of Optometry and Vision Science.

?The fact that people are holding the devices at close distances means that the eyes have to work that much harder to focus on the print and to have their eyes pointed in right direction,? said study co-author Dr. Mark Rosenfield, a professor at the SUNY State College of Optometry in New York City. ?The fact that the eyes are having to work harder means that people may get symptoms such as headaches and eye strain.?

Texting and browsing the Web on smartphones can also result in dry eye, discomfort and blurred vision after prolonged use, the study authors point out. Previous studies have also found that up to 90 percent of people who use computers experience eye problems.

Rosenfield got the idea for the study while commuting to work on the train and noticing that people using smartphones seemed to be holding them very close to their eyes.

Given that more and more adults and children are using smartphones to write and receive messages or look up restaurant reviews, it made sense to measure exactly how close people were holding their phones.

The experiments were relatively simple ones. In the first, about 130 volunteers with an average age of 23.2 years were asked to hold their smartphone while reading an actual text message.

In a different experiment, 100 participants, whose average age 24.9, were next asked to hold their smartphone when reading a web page.

The researchers then measured the distance between the device and the eyes as well as the font size.

When reading printed text in newspapers, books and magazines, the average working distance is close to 16 inches from the eyes, but the study volunteers writing or sending text messages held their phones, on average, only about 14 inches away. In some people, it was as close as 7 inches, Rosenfield said.

When viewing a web page, the average working distance was 12.6 inches.

The font on text messages tended to be slightly larger (about 10 percent, on average) than newspaper print, but web-page font was only 80 percent the size of newspaper print and, in some cases, as small as 30 percent, Rosenfield said.

The findings hold messages for doctors and smartphone-users alike.

Given the ubiquitousness of these handheld devices, eye doctors might consider testing people?s vision at closer distances and prescribing glasses for closer distances.

But there?s a simple way for smartphone addicts to minimize eye strain: Increase the font size on your device, advised Dr. Scott MacRae, a professor of ophthalmology and of visual science at the University of Rochester Medical Center and an eye surgeon.

This is especially important for sustained reading, like reading a book on Kindle, he noted.

Font size on an e-book reader is usually pretty easy to do. For other handheld devices,? MacRae said, ?the problem is to figure out how to do it.?

If you?re a regular computer user, try using Verdana 12-point font, the only font designed specifically for computers, MacRae said.

The authors are now also assessing Kindles and IPads, but those results haven?t been published.
