The story behind a photograph showing a 5-year-old black boy touching President Obama's hair?which has been hanging in the West Wing of the White House for more than three years?may be coming to your inbox soon.

The New York Times published the adorable back story on Thursday, and it's quickly become the most-emailed article on the Times' website.

In May 2009, the child, Jacob Philadelphia, was visiting the White House with his father, a former Marine who was leaving his 2-year stint working for the National Security Council as part of the White House staff. The father asked to take a family photo with the president. Jacob said he had a question for Obama, who was then in his fifth month in office.

The Times recounts the rest:

"I want to know if my hair is just like yours," he told Mr. Obama, so quietly that the president asked him to speak again.

Jacob did, and Mr. Obama replied, "Why don't you touch it and see for yourself?" He lowered his head, level with Jacob, who hesitated.

"Touch it, dude!" Mr. Obama said.

As Jacob patted the presidential crown, ... [White House photographer Pete] Souza snapped.

"So, what do you think?" Mr. Obama asked.

"Yes, it does feel the same," Jacob said.

As the paper noted, President Obama has largely avoided discussing race during his first term. But the photo "is tangible evidence" that the president "remains a potent symbol for blacks, with a deep reservoir of support."

"As a photographer, you know when you have a unique moment," Souza told the paper. "But I didn't realize the extent to which this one would take on a life of its own. That one became an instant favorite of the staff. I think people are struck by the fact that the president of the United States was willing to bend down and let a little boy feel his head."

I am only 22. I got married back in 2010 to a guy i met in high school..we were off and on in high school, then in college we just hung out sometimes, but pretty much called it quits bc he was tlking to other girls while trying to work stuff out with me...then he joined the army and i saw a change a good change. well i went out to his graduation and he asked if we could get married..long story short we got married a couple months later....well i moved out to where he was stationed and we lived there for 6 months, 3 months into our marriage i found out i was pregnant. then he found out they were kicking him out bc of pt problems. sooo we moved back home, a place i never wanted to come back too. he had high school friends and bad influences back at home...well i was right moving back home made him revert back to the "boy" he used to be...partying all the time, lying about where he was...it was getting tiring. well in october of 2011 i gave birth to a lil girl and things were ok between us. I mean i did almost everything for our child while he sat around playing video games. then in december we got in a huge fight over this girl he was tlking to. they have been best friends since like forever, but i asked him if he would cool it and not tlk to her as much and focus on our relationship. well we fought and he left... he wouldnt tlk to me for a week and a half told everyone is was done with me and wanted a divorce..he went out adn partied and only saw his daughter once....he lived with someone else for a couple of days and then moved back...but stayed locked in his room..(we live with his parents) well he came back a week and a half later and apologized and we went to counseling like 2 times. (not enough)..things were ok for a while but i found on his cell that he was tlkin to some girl again...well we went on a date in april adn came home and he has not wanted to be intimate for like a month or so....and we fought about that and he left again...he stopped tlkin to me. a couple days later he said he needed to tlk. Well he told me he wanted a seperation and that i needed to go live wiht my parents. i have been living here ever since then with our 7 month old...now that i moved out he is like thriving i guess you would call it...he is applying for a bettter job and is wanting to see his daughter and spend time with her, his parents do have some influence over him though bc they want to see her too...WHY NOW??? I mean i go through a yr and a half of marriage...i would do anything for him...i have been there for him through good and bad..its been a month and he still has yet to tlk to me...he wont look me in the eyes and he tried to avoid me at all cost. we have been fighting over who gets our daughter and when...its just not fair...all he keeps saying is he made a mistake in marrying me and we married for the wrong reasons. he tells his parents he wants a divorce.not really giving a good reasons just kindof making up excuses. well then i went out saturday night and he found out and? blew up saying i was a bad mom for leaving our daughter at home with my parents...cussing at my friend calling her aweful names and saying i was a waste of time...he is treating me AWEFUL and im not sure why he cares what i do now we r seperated.he was adopted and has issues he needs to work out. i pray and cry all the time i pray God would open his eyes and change his heart..i do want our relationship to work out, but its going to take ALOT of work and im not sure at this point he wants to...im jsut at my wits end as to knowing what to do..

Google to notify users infected with DNSChanger trojan

Google is embarking on an effort to notify Internet users if their computers or home routers are still infected with the DNSChanger Trojan, a piece of sophisticated malware that has compromised an estimated 500,000 systems. The outreach campaign comes a little more than a month ahead of July 9, the date on which the FBI is set to take all computers corrupted with the malware offline.

If your computer is among the affected crop, Google will alert you via special messages that will appear at the top of search results, reading, "Your computer appears to be infected," Google security engineer Damian Menscher explained in a May 22 blog post. Google's hope is to directly warn as many as 500,000 affected users within the week, although Menscher admitted, "We realize we won't reach every affected user."

If your computer shows signs of DNSChanger corruption, you will receive, along with the notification, recommendations from Google as to how to purge the malware from your devices. Although Google cannot guarantee its tips will fully excise the Trojan, Menscher said, "If more devices are cleaned and steps are taken to better secure the machines against further abuse, the notification effort will be well worth it."

[Will the FBI Shut Down My Computer? Questions and Answers]

The fear surrounding DNSChanger, and the possibility that people would lose their Internet access, began last November, when the FBI's "Operation Ghost Click" took down an Estonian cybercrime ring that had infected 4 million computers and routers worldwide (and at least 500,000 computers in the U.S.) with the Trojan.

DNSChanger (DNS is short for Domain Name System) enabled the crooks to hijack Web traffic and reroute it to compromised sites under their control, a process from which they netted $14 million in fraudulent advertising revenue.

Following the November bust, the FBI set up temporary DNS "surrogate" servers to keep the systems infected with the dangerous malware online while they were scrubbed of the malicious software. On March 5, a federal judge granted the government 120 days to keep the proxy servers running; a subsequent order pushed the deadline back to July 9.

If the Google alert tells you that your computer or router is affected, there are three things you need to do.

First, you'll have to change some technical settings on your computer. Click here for instructions on how to do so. That will make sure you still have Internet access when the fateful day comes.

The second thing to do will be to update and run strong anti-virus software? that will clean up your machine, because these particular malware infections are pretty nasty. You'll probably have to pay for the software. Here's a list of recommended anti-virus software.

The third step is to check it again once you've done the first two. If you're still seeing the Google alert, check the DNS Changer Check-Up.

If that's red, your router may be infected. Check the manufacturer's website for a firmware update. At worst, you may have to buy a new router.

SRAM Red 2012 Installation : Red Kite Prayer

So last week I laid my hands on a SRAM 2012 Red group. To use a more colloquial phrasing, you might say that my stock has risen enough with the folks in Chicago that they were willing to provide me with a group for review. It suggests they have some regard for my work. Which is pretty cool, considering we?re this tiny, independent blog thingy.

My plan, at least initially, was to install the Red group on a bike and then right it until I was supremely overtrained, or somewhere thereabouts, and then write a post about my experience with it. I?m writing this post because of my experience with working on the new group. Why? Well, my previous experience as a mechanic is enough that this group really impressed me.

What you see above is a shot of the installation instructions. Ordinarily, what passes for installation instructions, on the rare occasions that they are created, is a tepid improvement over the boilerplate that you get in bicycle owners? manuals. I?ve yet to see an owner?s manual that was anything but a CYA (cover your ass) document cooked up by a bunch of lawyers for the purpose of shielding a manufacturer from a lawsuit stemming from any sort of crash on a bike, including those where shoddy assembly may be an issue.

These installation and adjustment instructions are another matter. They begin by indicating which parts will be installed and where they go on the bike (not like that is big news though, huh?). Next, a legend indicates each of the tools that will be required from start to finish, and in exact detail. Those of you who have worked as wrenches will recall boxed bikes that often included a list of tools on the top of the box. That menu would include a screwdriver (sometimes two), pliers, a crescent wrench and often (though inexplicably) a hammer.

With the exception of the 10mm Allen key required to tighten the cranks, the 2012 Red is built around three different Allen keys?and no flippin? Torx wrenches. A 5mm Allen is used to fix the component to the bike, i.e. brake and derailleur fixing bolts and control lever clamps. A 4mm Allen is used for gross adjustment, i.e. cable fixing bolts and brake shoe adjustment. Finally, a 2.5mm Allen is used for fine adjustment, i.e. derailleur set screws, brake centering adjustment and chain catcher position. That sort of consistency speeds a mechanic?s work.

The directions take nothing for granted. They show cable routing, torque values and color code different operations. While Shimano has at times had some good installation instructions, these were the most boiled-down and direct of any I can recall reading. The one criticism I do have is that I found that there is an overlap of steps between the installation of the front and rear derailleurs. Because of how the derailleurs are adjusted and when the chain is supposed to be installed, it?s not possible to do all of either the front or rear derailleur before moving on to the other. The steps need to be coordinated between the two (they are currently separate instruction sheets included with each component) so as to complete all the steps prior to chain installation before moving on to those that depend on the chain being present.

It?s a picky point, but these directions are so good that the one flaw sticks out. When I used to work as a mechanic, I had a system for assembling bikes. I started with bearings then moved on to bar/stem and saddle, then brakes, before going to the derailleurs, in broad strokes. SRAM?s team of technical writers seems close to being able to creating a manual for assembling an entire bicycle from the frame out; such a manual would have the ability to clarify what absolutely must be done first before moving on to other procedures, which could get interrupted by going back to finish something else the mechanic (me) left out. Assembling a bike is a good deal more difficult today than it was in the 1990s, despite the fact that frame prep with a Campy tool kit is almost never required. And given what many shops and studios charge for labor, and how busy those wrenches are, anything that can make labor more efficient is good.

I should add that a portion of my training is as a technical writer and I have worked as one in a variety of capacities, including writing instruction manuals. My eye may be a bit more critical than most. To be fair, Shimano?s more recent efforts aren?t bad (and they?ve improved over the years), but they are nowhere near this good.

With 2012 Red, SRAM moved to a locking, threaded BB washer to accommodate more different bottom brackets. It makes sense because bottom bracket standards are proliferating like rabbits during spring. I can report this was one of the easiest bottom bracket/crank installations of my life, if not the absolute easiest. And it has been utterly creak-free so far.

The shot above is a top-down view of the front derailleur and that grey line is an alignment guide for the front derailleur. Set that line in plane with the big chainring and the yaw technology of the new derailleur eliminates the need for trim.

So the line on the cage establishes the angle of the derailleur while this slightly polished guide line on the cage?s inner plate helps guide the height for the front derailleur. It really eliminates guesswork and multiple adjustments. Once angle and height are established, you move on to the set screws. Then, all that?s left is cable tension, and to their credit, SRAM includes an in-line barrel adjuster so that you can set cable tension in case the frame doesn?t include them; this has been an issue for me with both Shimano and Campagnolo.

SRAM indicated that their engineers had altered the lever body shape so that it would work at more different angles and bar shapes. I did try playing around a bit with different lever positions relative to the bar and it seemed like users would have plenty of options. If anything, it made it more difficult for me to find my preferred angle because so many seemed to work. Something they haven?t talked about are these little pads that cushion the hands from the bar. They sit just where the heel of your hand would normally be positioned against the bend of the bar. You have to work a bit more to get them positioned correctly before taping down the cable housing (it took a couple of tries for me), but their addition has been well worth it.

The redesigned hoods offer enough flexibility in the midsection that it?s easier to flip those hoods up than a starlet?s skirt, making it a snap to fit the 5mm Allen driver in to tighten the levers in place. This aspect of their levers and hoods is something that Campagnolo and Shimano would both do well to study.

Perhaps the least-changed component from the whole group?installation-wise, that is?are the brakes. My biggest note on the brakes was that the front brake was included with three different length fixing nuts for the fork. No Campy group I?ve ever had did that, though I can?t say with Shimano; it?s been a long time since I assembled a Shimano group from boxes as opposed to with a bike. It?s not uncommon to receive a few extra odds and ends when you pull the parts from display boxes.

Brake-shoe hardware is frequently a source of frustration. Trying to hold the pad in place well enough to get the hardware tight, but without the brake-shoe holder twisting can be difficult with some brakes. With the new Red it was a snap. And once I had the pads positioned, all I needed to center the brakes was a 13mm cone wrench. Just like old times.

Last but not least is the component whose photo led off this post, the rear derailleur. I?ve little to report here, except that the new design makes it easier to pull a wheel into the dropouts. Also, by giving the mechanic a choice of tools for the high and low set screws is nice. I love the fact that you can use a 2.5mm Allen wrench so that when you give the pedals a turn and the bike shakes some in the stand it?s less likely that the wrench will pop out of the screw it?s in.

My overwhelming sense with this group is that the engineers who were charged with developing this new group really listened to the feedback the company had received, not just from pro riders and race mechanics but also from workaday wrenches. This stuff was easy to install and even easier to adjust, and ultimately that gave me plenty of time to pull parts from the box and note how they seemed incomplete, like the parts weren?t all there, if only because it?s all so damn light.

Sounder launches, we go hands-on (video)

We don't know about you, but most of us Engadget editors live in a perpetual state of inbox insanity. Keeping on top of voicemails, text messages, emails, IMs, Twitter DMs, Facebook and Google+ messages -- to name just a few -- is a herculean yet unavoidable task. As a result, personal messages often get drowned out in a sea of work-related correspondence.

Sounder is an app that aims to ease the inbox pain a little by providing a simple and immediate way to speak with those people that matter. Pick a few important Facebook friends and the app lets you talk to them directly at the push of a button via VoIP. The goal is to keep you connected to the folks closest to you. Sounder -- which launches today for free -- supports the iPhone and iPod touch, with iPad, desktop and Android versions in the works. A $0.99 in-app upgrade enables a super slick "flip-to-talk" feature which lets you reply without waking your phone -- just turn it over and speak.

After meeting founders Nancy Broden (of Twitter fame) and Michael Fortson (former Qik Director) at SXSW, we got the chance to take an early prototype of Sounder for a spin and came away impressed with how simple yet effective it is. Since our demo in Austin, the company's been busy fine tuning the app and putting in the final touches -- like that "flip-to-talk" functionality. Want to know more? Summit canceled as Ukraine isolation deepens over treatment of Tymoshenko

Ukraine was slated to host a summit this week, but with a dozen European leaders boycotting in protest of Kiev's treatment of Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukraine opted to cancel it instead.

In a stinging humiliation that underscores Ukraine's increasing isolation, President Viktor Yanukovych today bowed to a boycott by a dozen European leaders angry over treatment of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, indefinitely postponing a prestigious summit meeting it was to have hosted this week in the Crimean resort of Yalta.

"Due to the fact that a number of European heads of states are unable to attend the summit of presidents of the Central European Countries in Yalta, Ukraine found it reasonable to postpone it until a later date," Alexander Dykusarov, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, said in a terse statement.

The event was meant to showcase Ukraine's growing integration into the European community, and to set the stage for Ukraine's co-hosting, along with Poland, of the Euro 2012 soccer championships ? a huge event in the life of all Europeans ? next month.

Instead, the growing impression is that Ukraine is falling out of the European orbit and drifting back into Moscow's embrace.

Leaders of Germany, Estonia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, and others have refused to attend the annual regional meeting in an escalating row over the alleged mistreatment of Ms. Tymoshenko,?who was sentenced to seven years in prison last October for "abuse of office" while she was prime minister. She also faces a fresh trial on charges of alleged tax evasion, which is scheduled to open in a Kharkov court later this month.

Tymoshenko, who says all the charges are politically motivated, is currently on a hunger strike and alleges that she has been beaten in prison. She also says she is suffering from severe chronic back pain brought on by her ordeal, and has criticized her treatment by state doctors in a Kharkov clinic. Her family wants her to go to Germany for treatment, but she refuses to leave Ukraine. In any case, there seems little chance the Yanukovych government would let her leave.

She was scheduled to be seen by German doctors at a Kharkov clinic today.

"She has not abandoned her hunger strike and she will not abandon it until the question of her situation has been resolved," Tymoshenko's lawyer, Olexandr Plakhotnyuk, told journalists today. "She is drinking only water. What will take place next will be decided after she meets doctors today."

Tymoshenko was narrowly defeated in presidential elections by Yanukovych two years ago, and was rapidly removed from all her official positions shortly afterward.

She remains Ukraine's top opposition leader, and her prosecutions by the Yanukovych government are widely suspected of being a means of removing her from the political stage in advance of parliamentary elections slated for later this year. Ukraine's next presidential polls will be held in 2015.

Calls are now mounting for a boycott of Ukrainian venues for the Euro 2012 soccer matches which, if it happens, will strike hard at Yanukovych's personal prestige and the sensitivities of all Ukrainians.

The foreign ministry in Kiev warned last week that any targeting of the soccer championship to punish Yanukovych would "damage the interests of millions of ordinary Ukrainians that vote for various political parties or who are not interested in politics at all."

Ukraine has at least one reliable friend in freshly inaugurated Russian president Vladimir Putin, who has dismissed any suggestion that Moscow might join such a boycott, saying "you can't mix politics, business, and other issues with sport."

Apple and Samsung have dramatically reduced the number of patent-infringement claims they have filed against each other.

Following judge?s orders, Apple said it will narrow down its claims against Samsung, cutting them in half. While Samsung has agreed to drop five of the 12 patents it has set against Apple, reducing?claims by 80 percent.

Both companies hope that this will help retain the proposed July 30 trial date as it will be much more manageable for both the judge and the jury.
