Quick: name a famous female scientist. If you said "Marie Curie," you?re not alone. In fact, a lot of people can?t think of a single other example. Well, England's Royal Society is fixin? to rectify that. On Friday, October 19th, it?s sponsoring a Wiki-editing marathon for articles about women in science.

Wikipedia is the go-to source for information on pretty much everything. But its coverage is a little light when it comes to the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and math. So the Royal Society is looking for volunteers with wi-fi and a bit of Wiki knowhow to create or enhance entries on female scientists.

Suggestions include Lilian Bland, the first woman to build and fly her own aircraft; Martha Ludwig, who helped solve the first protein crystal structure done in the US; and Barbara Crawford Johnson, the only woman to serve on the NASA team that engineered the moon landing.

You can take part in the effort using Twitter. The hashtag is #WomenSciWP. That?s women-S-C-I-W-P. So give Marie Curie a well-earned rest and help other women in science get the wiki-recognition they deserve.

Google snafu drags Wall Street lower

A sharp drop in Google's stock dragged the Nasdaq composite down 1 percent after a weak earnings report for the company was inadvertently released hours ahead of schedule.?

Other indexes closed with smaller losses Thursday.?

The Nasdaq lost 31 points to close at 3,073. An 8 percent drop in Google, the third-largest component in the Nasdaq after Apple and Microsoft, was a big factor.

Google plunged after its report, which badly missed analysts' estimates, was released prematurely. Trading of Google shares was temporarily halted, and the company blamed publisher R.R. Donnelley for the mistake.

The slide in Google's stock after the midday surprise was the biggest drag on the S&P 500. Tech stocks suffered, with the S&P 500 information technology index losing 1.53 percent. Shares of IBM , which disappointed investors a day earlier, lost 2.8 percent to close at $194.96 and pull the Dow lower.?

"It's a huge impact on the market, and especially the tech stocks," said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners in Chicago. "What happened to Google is a continuation in the tech sector of some very poor earnings numbers. But we're not seeing the same lack of performance across the board from other sectors."?

The Dow Jones industrial average dipped 8.06 points, or 0.06 percent, to 13,548.94 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index shed 3.57 points, or 0.24 percent, to 1,457.34. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 31.26 points, or 1.01 percent, to close at 3,072.87.?

Verizon Communications rose 2.4 percent to $45.78 after the company reported a record quarterly profit. Verizon attributed these gains to its wireless business. It also posted revenue that slightly exceeded expectations.

Morgan Stanley reported better-than-expected adjusted quarterly earnings on Thursday as big gains in its bond trading business boosted its revenue. The stock fell, however, losing 3.8 percent to $17.79.

Technology was by far the day's weakest sector, but seven of the S&P 500's 10 sectors ended the session higher.

Overall, with 19 percent of S&P 500 companies having reported results, quarterly earnings are expected to drop 1.5 percent from a year ago ? an improvement from a decline of 3 percent forecast earlier in the week, according to Thomson Reuters data.

After the close, Microsoft reported that its fiscal first-quarter profit fell, hurt by a dip in computer sales running its Windows operating system. Microsoft's stock fell 1.2 percent after the bell. It had closed at $29.50, down 0.3 percent in regular trading.

Philip Morris International
was also scheduled to post earnings after the bell on Thursday.

Weak jobs data released on Thursday also weighed on the market. Weekly jobless claims rose to 388,000 ? or 32,000 more than analysts expected. A Labor Department official said it appeared that state-level administrative issues were distorting the data.

"On a longer-term basis and non-seasonally adjusted basis, the jobs numbers are in line with where they're been all year. And that's still indicative of very slowly improving employment," Nolte said.

Shares of eBay gained 5.5 percent to $50.83 after S&P Capital IQ raised its target price on the stock by $5 to $53.

Wednesday's decline snapped the S&P 500's three-day streak of gains, when it rose 2.3 percent.

Lam Research gained 7.2 percent to $36.01 after Piper Jaffray cut its price target on the wafer manufacturing company's stock to $39 from $45. The brokerage has an "overweight" rating on the stock.

Pakistani girl on Taliban hit list shot outside her school

Gunmen hunted down young Malala Yousafzai at her school, shooting her in the head after she dared to criticize the extremists who are ravaging her country. NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari ordered Tuesday that the young Pakistani activist who was seriously injured in a shooting by the Pakistani Taliban be sent abroad for medical treatment, the website for Pakistan's Dawn newspaper reported.

Malala Yousafzai, a 14-year-old Pakistani activist who won international acclaim for her work promoting peace, and two other young girls were shot and seriously injured Tuesday, police and hospital officials said.

Local police and hospital officials told NBC News that Malala was shot after leaving her school in the Swat region.

Official sources told Dawn that the single bullet, which hit Malala's head, had pierced down to her backbone.

?We have thoroughly examined her, she is in critical condition. The bullet traveled from her head and then lodged in the back shoulder, near the neck,? a doctor told the AFP agency, according to Dawn, requesting anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media.

Soldiers take Malala Yousafzai, 14, to an army hospital after a gunman attacked her and two other girls in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Tuesday.

?Next three to four days are important for her life. She is in the intensive care unit and semi-conscious, although not on the ventilator,? he added, according to Dawn.

?In such a condition, she immediately needs a sophisticated surgical procedure, which is not possible in the country,? sources told Dawn.

Malala was nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize in 2011 for a blog she wrote under a pseudonym for the BBC.?She also won the National Peace Prize in Pakistan, was honored with a school named after her, and quickly became an outspoken critic of the Taliban in Pakistan and a public advocate for peace.

In the blog, she chronicled life in the Swat Valley under the brutal and oppressive rule of the local faction of the Pakistani Taliban, who carried out public floggings, hung dead bodies in the streets, and banned education for girls.

Obama her 'ideal' leader
In early 2011, the?militants had added Malala to their hit list.?

"We wanted to kill her as she was pro-West, she was speaking against Taliban and more important she was calling President Obama as her ideal. She was young but was promoting a Western culture in the Pakhtun populated areas," Ihsanullah Ihsan, the spokesman of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP said Tuesday.

The Taliban had made a plan for killing her a year ago but were waiting for an opportunity, he told NBC News.

Malala was initially treated at the Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital, in Mingora, the main city of Swat, but was airlifted to a hospital in the larger city of Peshawar.

A?police official, quoting other students who witnessed the shooting, said some people came in a car and stopped in front of the school and then asked them to identify Malala.

FORTUNE ? In a post Dodd-Frank world, banks are scurrying for profits in a largely unregulated area of banking: pre-paid debit cards. But just as the newfound party gets started, it could just as quickly come to an end.

On Monday, Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) and American Express (AXP) unveiled Bluebird ? a prepaid card that works much like a debit card. Though it's not tied to a typical, regulated bank account, cardholders can use many of the same features as traditional bank account holders, from withdrawing cash from ATMs to making deposits via their smartphone. However, they won't have to keep a minimum balance or pay any monthly or annual fees, which is a draw for people who use few, if any, bank services (a market worth an estimated $45 million market). Also, the companies say, there will be no overdraft fees.

Wal-Mart's move is to be expected. The Bentonville, AK-based chain has held its position as America's neighborhood retailer and grocery store. With mixed successes, though, it has tried in recent years to emerge as America's neighborhood bank: Wal-Mart has financial services locations, called MoneyCenters, in more than 1,000 stores that offer electronic bill paying, check cashing and tax-preparation services.?In recent years, the chain has tried to get a consumer-banking license, but the financial services industry has bitterly (and successfully) fought such efforts.

While Wal-Mart's big dreams in banking are far from realized, the chain has nonetheless followed what other banks have done by making prepaid-debit cards a bigger part of business.

In March, Wells Fargo (WFC) introduced a reloadable prepaid card. JPMorgan (JPM) followed with a card branded, "Liquid," which for $4.95 a month allows cardholders to withdraw and deposit as they please. Wal-Mart certainly adds to the competition, with Bluebird, which will be available to customers next week. Of course, this isn't Wal-Mart's first prepaid card. The chain offers MoneyCard, which is available for $3 to buy, $3 a month and $3 to reload. Bluebird will cost $2 per out-of-network ATM withdraw and $2 per withdraw without direct deposit.

Indeed, there's a business case for going into the prepaid business. It scoops up all those consumers tired of high banking fees. It also responds to the growing number of budget-conscious spenders who might rather deposit a few bucks in their prepaid card each week and save the rest of it.

More broadly, though, prepaid cards give banks a way around rules tied to a narrow provision of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law, called the Durbin Amendment, which restricts how much banks that issue debit cards can charge merchants. Prepaid cards are an exception, so banks can still charge merchants high fees whenever a consumer swipes a prepaid card.

But as Wal-Mart and others flock to get a slice of the market for prepaid cards, it can easily come to an end. The nation's consumer financial watchdog, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is considering restrictions on prepaid cards typically marketed to lower-income consumers. The agency is reportedly worried about high fees and inadequate disclosures over exactly how much these products cost customers.

And as Wal-Mart deepens its footing in financial services, it's hard not to wonder if the chain is legally operating as a bank, or if it's actually a full-fledged bank. These are question posed by bank analyst Dick Bove of Rochdale Securities in a research note released Monday:

"Wal-Mart will be collecting deposits through direct deposit accounts. It receives fees as a consequence of its lending activities through its credit cards. Plus, it hedges its business operations in the financial markets. I can find virtually no information about any of these activities in the company's Annual Report and 10K. However, companies engaged in collecting deposits and lending money are by definition banks. Banks are not allowed to be involved in banking and commercial activities. It appears that Wal-Mart is involved in both."

Bove may or may not be totally off. Wal-Mart did not respond to a request for comment.

The larger point is that the business of prepaid cards is so unregulated that many are trying to get in on it ? banks and non-banks, alike.

The mental health field is filled with heroes. Whether researchers, authors, actors, coaches or clinicians, these individuals help others lead more fulfilling, less stress-soaked lives. They help shrink the lingering stigma of mental illness.

They advocate for better treatments. They create better treatments. They practice what they preach. And they promote a message of hope and positivity.

In honor of World Mental Health Day today, five practitioners reveal the heroes who?ve influenced how they work ? and even live their lives.

John Duffy, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist and author of the book The Available Parent: Radical Optimism for Raising Teens and Tweens:

My mental health hero is not a degreed clinician, but conducts the most brilliant, laser-sharp, concise, and empathic interventions I have ever seen, or had the good fortune to have benefited from directly. She is renowned life coach Cheryl Richardson.

I emulate and admire her keen sense of intuition and her remarkable skill at recognizing what a client needs to hear, and when she needs to be silent and let a client struggle through an issue on his own.

She encourages people to take excellent care of themselves, from the physical to the deepest psychological level, and helps them discover, quickly, the often deep-seated nature of their distress.

To watch her work is truly a privilege, and a clinic for any mental health professional.

Deborah Serani, Psy.D, a clinical psychologist and author of the book Living with Depression:

I have many mental health heroes, ranging from professors I had in school, clients that have inspired me, even researchers in the field whose work transformed my way of thinking.

But if I had to choose one singular hero, it would be actress Delta Burke.

You see, when I was in the midst of a major depressive episode back in 1980, she came on television to talk about her bouts of depression.

Delta Burke was my age peer, and seeing her on television and in magazines some thirty years ago discussing her battle with a mood disorder was awe-inspiring. No one ever before had done that! In many ways, her self-disclosure helped me realize that I was in need of treatment for my own depression.

Fast-forward to 2010, when after finishing my book Living with Depression, I reached out to Ms. Burke to let her know the value of her narrative story. It took some elbow grease but I received an email from her agent with the where?s and how?s to forward a personal letter and my book to Ms. Burke.

Just five days later, my phone rang.

?Deborah?? a woman said with a twang and drawl.

?Yes?? I replied.

?Well, hello, Deborah. This is Delta Burke. I just had to call you to talk about your book.?

From there, we talked about our respective experiences with depression and our struggles with stigma.

Lastly, I let her know that she saved my life by talking about her own mental illness. In my eyes, she?s a superhero ? no cape needed.

Jeffrey Sumber, M.A., a psychotherapist, author and teacher:

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a conference this summer, which featured Bren? Brown as a keynote speaker. I absolutely loved her approach to life, her ability to incorporate a fresh sense of humor and self-reflection as a tool to share her wisdom with others.

Her work on the ordinary courage required to combat the shame so many of us carry is so incredibly important for the vast majority of us that it is absurd more people haven?t yet heard of her work.

I?m also a huge fan of my dear friend and colleague, Dr. John Duffy. John is one of those men who walks his talk. As a close personal friend, I watch this man treat his family and friends exactly the way he encourages people in his book to treat their loved ones, with respect, acceptance and a good sense of humor.

Additionally, his teachings on the power of intention have inspired countless others to strive toward positivity and self-actualization.

To me, this is what the field of mental health is all about: We all are dealt a different hand of challenges and blessings and have a journey toward healing and achieving personal, career and spiritual wellness and success.

I also admire Dr. Dyer?s career trajectory from counseling to writing to speaking ? this is a similar path I hope to achieve myself. I find identifying heroes to be extremely useful in clarifying goals and seeing that they are attainable.

I laugh because I told my older sister that Wayne Dyer is one of my heroes and she said, ?You know, Joyce, I think he was my drivers ed teacher.? I told her she was clearly confused but Googled him and learned she was correct ? he taught drivers ed early in his career while working as a guidance counselor in the Detroit area.

Irvin Yalom ? My first few years of graduate school were filled with black-and-white proclamations: Always maintain therapeutic neutrality, don?t self-disclose, hold fast to therapy boundaries. I found those absolutes safe, but lacking the very human exceptions to the rule.

Then I read Yalom?s The Gift of Therapy, which introduced the rich grey areas within therapy. He recommended radical ideas like focusing on the here-and-now during the session, self-disclosure when it benefits the client, and visiting the client?s home (I?m still not quite ready for that one).

As scary as it is to be more authentic and vulnerable in sessions, I?ve found it helps to create a richer and more intense experience for us both.

I?ve had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Yalom a couple of times, and experienced him as warm and profound in person as he is in writing.

My clients and I owe a lot to his person-before-theory approach to psychotherapy.

S.Africa's MTN hit by slide in Iran rial

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The impact of Iran's currency slide has reached beyond its borders, hitting shares of MTN Group, the South African mobile operator that derives nearly a tenth of its revenue from the Middle Eastern country.

MTN, which has been unable to repatriate profits from its Irancell unit because of Western sanctions on Iran, flagged in August that further rial weakness would deflate its second-half earnings.

Its shares were down 3.7 percent at 152.06 rand in afternoon trade in Johannesburg, bringing its losses this month to nearly 5 percent.

The rial has lost about a third of its value against the U.S. dollar in the last two weeks as U.S.-led sanctions cut the country's ability to earn hard currency from oil exports.

MTN operates in 21 countries across Africa and the Middle East, including a 49 percent stake in Irancell.

"It's just that there will be foreign exchange losses that will be included in the earnings number for the year, that's the main concern," said one Johannesburg-based portfolio manager, who declined to be identified.

The rial has collapsed two-thirds in little more than one year in the open market but the government's official rate has remained the same since January.

"The unofficial rate trades well below the official rate. The fear is always that if the official rate drops to the black market rate, then MTN will take a knock in their report," said one analyst, who also did not want to be named.

MTN said in August it was in talks with South African and U.S. officials about moving money out of the country. The company's chief executive said at the time it had been unable to take cash out of the business for at least six months.

MTN is being sued by rival Turkcell for $4.2 billion in a U.S. court, saying it used bribery and lobbied South Africa to support Tehran's military in return for a 2005 cellular licence in Iran that was originally awarded to the Turkish firm.

MTN has denied the charges.
