Speaking of authors who are not dead yet: whenever that Great Critic in the sky delivers His final assessment of John Cleese, the 72-year-old Monty Python co-founder should earn a place in comedy paradise just on the basis of his performance in the ?Ministry of Silly Walks? skit. (To say nothing of the ?Dead Parrot? and ?Cheese Shop? bits.) Until then, Mr. Cleese may sometimes perambulate strangely but he still types perfectly fine, and he has agreed to write a book about his life that the Crown Archetype imprint of Random House said on Monday it had acquired.
Mr. Cleese, an alumnus of Cambridge University (and its Footlights theater club, where he met Graham Chapman, his future fellow Python), wrote for the British entertainer David Frost before helping to create ?Monty Python?s Flying Circus? and starring on programs like ?Fawlty Towers? and in films like ?A Fish Called Wanda.? Crown Archetype, which does not yet have a title or a release date for his book, said in a news release that the memoir will chronicle ?the inside story of how a shy child from Weston-super-Mare, who dabbled briefly with teaching and law, went on to become one of the most feted writers and performers of the past fifty years.?
Mr. Cleese said in a statement, ?It?s the perfect moment to look back on my life in anticipation of the next fifty years.?
