InkSpot: The Importance of Format
One of the reasons my literary agent and I sought out Midnight Ink as a publisher was format. I wanted my books to be published in the two formats that Midnight Ink produces simultaneously--trade paperback and ebook. Why? Because readers were asking me for those formats. At the time, my mysteries were only in hardcover and large-print, both expensive formats that were hard to sell in a down economy.
Ideally, I'd love for my books to be available in all formats simultaneously, including hardcover, trade and mass-market paperback, ebook, large-print, audio, etc. so readers could choose the format they prefer. However, because of the costs involved and the low returns-on-investment of producing books in so many formats, most publishers only produce a subset of the possible formats. By restricting your book to only some formats, you're losing potential readers that prefer others. Of course, you want your book to be in the most popular formats. That's why the choice of publisher--and the formats they produce--is so important!
For a fiction author, ebook is becoming a more and more essential format. As discussed in this Publisher's Weekly article, fiction is the lead driver of ebook sales, accounting for 61% of sales and 51% of revenue in 2010. And by genre, Mystery/Detective is tied for fourth place with Romance, behind first place Literary/Classic (because of all the free classic books available), second place Science Fiction and third place Christian Fiction. So, as a mystery author, I am very, very glad that my most recent Deadly Currents mystery is available in ebook format, and even more pleased that they can be read on the entire gamut of devices, from Kindle and Nook to iPads, cell phones, and computers.
My new format goal? Downloadable audio! And yes, my agent knows I'm itching to sign away those rights. :)
As for what I prefer to read, I'm old-fashioned and choose paper over electronic, because I already spend so much time on a computer. And my favorite paper format is trade paperback. What about you? What book format(s) do you prefer?

Canadian foreign minister visits Libya rebels (Reuters)
VANCOUVER (Reuters) ? There will be bumps on Libya's road to democracy even after current leader Muammar Gaddafi is overthrown, Canada's foreign minister said on Monday after meeting with Libyan rebel leaders in Benghazi.
John Baird, who made a secretive half-day visit to the rebel-held city of Benghazi, said he came away impressed with the rebels' commitment to pursuing democratic ideals, but recognized change will not come quickly.
"We're not going to move from Gaddafi to Thomas Jefferson overnight, but the road map and path they have laid out is a remarkably impressive one," Baird told reporters in a conference call from Rome.
Baird met with members of the National Transitional Council, which Canada recently recognized as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people.
For security reasons the timing of Baird's visit to Benghazi was not disclosed until after he had left the eastern Libyan city, although he had said earlier he was planning to visit the country.
The minister called his trip a fact-finding mission, and said he still believes the council represents the best option for the Libyan people to get a democratic government.
"Will it be perfect? Will it be without struggle? Absolutely not. I think we need to be realistic on that," he said. "There are no guarantees in life."
Baird's visit coincided with the announcement by the International Criminal Court on Monday that it had issued an arrest warrant for Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam and Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi on charges of crimes against humanity.
The rebels have been battling Gaddafi's forces since late February, when thousands of people rebelled, prompting a fierce crackdown by Gaddafi's security forces in what has turned into the bloodiest of the Arab Spring uprisings.
Baird also traveled to a base in Sicily to meet with Canadian military air crews involved in the NATO mission in Libya.

This is the fourth part in a series of articles which raises awareness of commonly encountered disabilities and offers advice on how to interact with people with disabilities. We end the series with a look at the disability etiquette surrounding people with mental health problems or learning disabilities.
This series is based on the disability etiquette material published by the United Spinal Association and is an opportunity for City Connect to promote the excellent charity work done by disability charities, in particular Mind and Mencap. City Connect aims to help readers avoid disability discrimination by providing clear guidelines on disability etiquette.
Psychiatric Disabilities (Mental Illness)
People with psychiatric disabilities may at times have difficulty coping with the tasks and interactions of daily life. Their disorder may interfere with their ability to feel, think or relate to others. Most people with psychiatric disabilities are not violent. One of the main obstacles they face is the attitudes that people have about them. Because it is a hidden disability, chances are you will not even realize that the person has a mental health condition.
- Stress can affect the person?s ability to function. Try to keep the pressure of the situation to a minimum.
- People who have psychiatric disabilities have varying personalities and different ways of coping with their disability. Some may have trouble picking up on social cues; others may be supersensitive. One person may be very high energy, while someone else may appear sluggish. Treat each person as an individual. Ask what will make him most comfortable and respect his needs to the maximum extent possible.
- In a crisis, stay calm and be supportive as you would with anyone. Ask how you can help, and find out if there is a support person who can be sent for. If appropriate, you might ask if the person has medication that he needs to take.

Developmental Disabilities
People with developmental disabilities learn slowly. They have a hard time using what they have learned and applying it from one setting or situation to another.
- Speak to the person in clear sentences, using simple words and concrete?rather than abstract?concepts. Help her understand a complex idea by breaking it down into smaller parts.
- Don?t use baby talk or talk down to people who have developmental disabilities. Gauge the pace, complexity, and vocabulary of your speech according to theirs.
- Remember that the person is an adult and, unless you are informed otherwise, can make her own decisions.
- People with developmental disabilities may be anxious to please. During an interview, the person may tell you what she thinks you want to hear. In certain situations, such as law enforcement or a doctor?s examination, it can have grave consequences if your interview technique is not effective. Questions should be phrased in a neutral way to elicit accurate information. Verify responses by repeating each question in a different way.
- It can be difficult for people with developmental disabilities to make quick decisions. Be patient and allow the person to take their time.
- Clear signage with pictograms can help a person who has developmental disabilities to find her way around a facility.
- People with developmental disabilities often rely on routine and on the familiar to manage work and daily living. Be aware that a change in the environment or in a routine may require some attention and a period of adjustment.
People with Learning Disabilities
Learning disabilities are life long disorders that interfere with a person?s ability to receive, express or process information. Although they have certain limitations, most people with learning disabilities have average or above-average intelligence. You may not realize that the person has a learning disability because he functions so well. Or you may be confused about why such a high-functioning person has problems in one aspect of his work.
- People with dyslexia or other reading disabilities have trouble reading written information. Give them verbal explanations and allow extra time for reading.
- Don?t be surprised if you tell someone very simple instructions and he requests that you write them down. Because spoken information gets ?scrambled? as he listens, a person who has a learning disability such as auditory processing disorder may need information demonstrated or in writing.
- Ask the person how you can best relay information. Be direct in your communication. A person with a learning disability may have trouble grasping subtleties.
- It may be easier for the person to function in a quiet environment without distractions, such as a radio playing, people moving around or loudly patterned curtains.

People with Traumatic (or Acquired) Brain Injury
People with traumatic brain injury have had damage to the brain usually as the result of trauma, such as an accident or stroke.
- Some of the factors that affect persons with learning disabilities also apply to persons with traumatic brain injury. People with brain injury may have a loss of muscle control or mobility that is not obvious. For example, a person may not be able to sign her name, even though she can move her hand.
- A person with a brain injury may have poor impulse control. The person may make inappropriate comments and may not understand social cues or ?get? indications that she has offended someone. In her frustration to understand, or to get her own ideas across, she may seem pushy. All of these behaviours arise as a result of the injury.
- A person with a brain injury may be unable to follow directions due to poor short-term memory or poor directional orientation. She may ask to be accompanied, or she may use a guide dog for orientation, although she does not appear to be mobility impaired.
- If you are not sure that the person understands you, ask if she would like you to write down what you were saying.
- The person may have trouble concentrating or organizing her thoughts, especially in an over stimulating environment, like a crowded movie theatre or transportation terminal. Be patient. You might suggest going somewhere with fewer distractions.
The Basics
Ask before you help
Just because someone has a disability, don?t assume she needs help. If the setting is accessible, people with disabilities can usually get around fine. Adults with disabilities want to be treated as independent people. Offer assistance only if the person appears to need it. And if she does want help, ask how before you act.
Be sensitive about physical contact
Some people with disabilities depend on their arms for balance. Grabbing them?even if your intention is to assist?could knock them off balance. Avoid patting a person on the head or touching his wheelchair, scooter or cane. People with disabilities consider their equipment part of their personal space.
Think before you speak
Always speak directly to the person with a disability, not to his companion, aide or sign language interpreter. Making small talk with a person who has a disability is great; just talk to him as you would with anyone else. Respect his privacy. If you ask about his disability, he may feel like you are treating him as a disability, not as a human being. (However, many people with disabilities are comfortable with children?s natural curiosity and do not mind if a child asks them questions.)
Don?t make assumptions
People with disabilities are the best judge of what they can or cannot do. Don?t make decisions for them about participating in any activity. Depending on the situation, it could be a violation of the law to exclude people because of a presumption about their limitations.
Respond graciously to requests
When people who have a disability ask for an accommodation at your business, it is not a complaint. It shows they feel comfortable enough in your establishment to ask for what they need. And if they get a positive response, they will probably come back again and tell their friends about the good service they received.
Terminology Tips
Say ?person with a disability? rather than ?disabled person.?
Say ?people with disabilities? rather than ?the disabled.?
For specific disabilities, saying ?person with Tourette syndrome? or ?person who has cerebral palsy? is usually a safe bet.
Still, individuals do have their own preferences. If you are not sure what words to use, ask.Avoid outdated terms like ?handicapped? or ?crippled.? Be aware that many people with disabilities dislike jargony, euphemistic terms like ?physically challenged? and ?differently abled.? Say ?wheelchair user,? rather than ?confined to a wheelchair? or ?wheelchair bound.? The wheelchair is what enables the person to get around and participate in society; it?s liberating, not confining.
With any disability, avoid negative, disempowering words, like ?victim? or ?sufferer.? Say ?person with AIDS? instead of ?AIDS victim? or ?person who suffers from AIDS.?
It?s okay to use idiomatic expressions when talking to people with disabilities. For example, saying, ?It was good to see you,? and ?See you later,? to a person who is blind is completely acceptable; they use these expressions themselves all the time!
Many people who are Deaf communicate with sign language and consider themselves to be members of a cultural and linguistic minority group. They refer to themselves as Deaf with a capital ?D,? and may be offended by the term ?hearing impaired.? Others may not object to the term, but in general it is safest to refer to people who have hearing loss but who communicate in spoken language as ?hard of hearing? and to people with profound hearing losses as Deaf or deaf.

Maya govt denies permission for Cong rally in UP - Politics ...

New Delhi: The Mayawati government on Sunday refused permission to the Congress to take out 'Nyaya' march in Lucknow on Monday against the alleged spurt in crimes in UP, citing possibility of breach of peace. But the city administration has flatly refused permission for the rally. Prohibitory orders have been issued in Lucknow.
The Opposition has also accused the Mayawati government of shielding the accused in the case. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said, "The BSP government is trying to protect criminals in the state. It's clear now that Sachan was not involved in the murders of Dr Arya and Dr BP Singh. Congress will fight this battle for justice in court, in the assembly and on the streets."
District Magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar said that permission has not been given for the Congress march as police apprehended breach of peace and inconvenience to residents due traffic disruptions. He said prohibitory orders under Section 144 IPC are already in force in the state capital.
UP Congress President Rita Bahuguna Joshi reacted strongly and said, "We were not expecting this decision from the BSP government as this was a peaceful march. Ridiculous how this government functions. This is a fascist style of functioning."
The Congress had announced to take out the march from Bal Sanghralaya in Lucknow on Monday morning. Senior party leaders including MLAs and MPs were likely to participate in the march to be led by Joshi.

China releases human rights activist Hu Jia (AFP)
BEIJING (AFP) ? One of China's most prominent prisoners of conscience, Hu Jia, returned home Sunday after completing a jail term for subversion but looked likely to be muzzled along with other top dissidents.
The human rights activist's release after more than three years in prison comes after outspoken artist Ai Weiwei emerged in Beijing last week from nearly three months in police custody amid a government crackdown on dissent.
Hu is widely expected to be hit with the same strict curbs as those applied to Ai and a range of other activists and rights lawyers who have apparently been ordered to keep quiet to gain their freedom.
Hu returned to his home outside Beijing early Sunday morning, his wife and fellow activist Zeng Jinyan said on Twitter.
"On a sleepless night, Hu Jia arrived home at 2:30 am. Peaceful, very happy. Need to rest for awhile. Thanks to you all," she said.
Hu, 37, was jailed on subversion charges in April 2008 just ahead of the Beijing Olympics after angering the ruling Communist Party through his years of bold campaigning for civil rights, the environment, and AIDS sufferers.
Ai's detention had sparked an international outcry and his recent release has been widely seen as an attempt by China to defuse criticism during a visit by Premier Wen Jiabao to Europe now under way.
Hu's release at the end of his prison term, however, was long expected.
Aside from his jail sentence, Hu also faces one year of "deprivation of political rights" -- essentially a ban on political activities, and Zeng has indicated he would be making no public statements.
"During this time, he must treat his cirrhosis and take care of his family," she said on Twitter last week.
Hu suffers from cirrhosis of the liver and Zeng has said the ailment has worsened during his time in jail, blaming the prison for providing inadequate medical care.
Hu and Zeng have a young daughter.
It was not immediately clear exactly what sort of restrictions Hu may face.
Attempts to reach Zeng by telephone at the couple's home were unsuccessful and Chinese security personnel prevented AFP journalists from reaching their apartment on Sunday.
Hu began his activism by highlighting discrimination against Chinese HIV/AIDS sufferers and environmental degradation but later spoke out on behalf of a wide range of victims of government abuses.
As a result, he and Zeng have suffered repeated detention or lengthy periods of house arrest that they have criticised as unlawful.
They made a short documentary, available on the Internet, detailing one of these detentions from 2006-2007 called "Prisoners of Freedom City".
Regularly tipped as a potential candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize, Hu has won overseas human rights awards from bodies such as the European Parliament.
"China has been a dictatorship throughout its entire history," Hu told AFP in a 2007 interview.
"Now... I believe that we have a chance to bring democracy to this country for the first time in 5,000 years."
He was taken into custody in December 2007 amid a previous crackdown on government critics ahead of the Beijing Olympics and convicted on subversion charges.
Rights groups have accused China's ruling Communist Party of abusing such charges as a way of silencing government critics.
Zeng said police told her Hu was not likely to enjoy a "normal" life after his release, remarks she interpreted to mean confinement to his home like some other recently released dissidents.
New York-based activist group Human Rights Watch on Friday urged the Chinese government not to subject Hu and his family to "house arrest or other extrajudicial deprivations of liberty".
The government launched a major crackdown on dissent in February in an apparent bid to squelch any possible Chinese version of the "Arab Spring" uprisings in the Middle East.
Normally outspoken detainees such as Ai have uncharacteristically refused public comment after their release.
Activists say this indicates a systematic new government strategy to silence dissenters, possibly through threats against them or their families.

India's BJP demands 'bug probe'
Pranab Mukherjee is one of the most senior ministers India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded a probe into an alleged security breach in Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's office.
The Indian Express newspaper has reported that "planted adhesives" were found in Mr Mukherjee's office last year, pointing to an attempt to bug it.
The newspaper said investigators had found the adhesives to be some "sort of chewing gum".
Mr Mukherjee also said that investigations had "found nothing".
But the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the news report was "shocking" and demanded a "thorough investigation".
"Is it that the government was spying on its own finance minister? Or is it a corporate house? In either case, it is a matter of grave concern. It is India's Watergate and needs to be thoroughly investigated," the leader of the opposition Sushma Swaraj said.
The Indian Express reported on Tuesday that Mr Mukherjee had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last September asking for a "secret inquiry" into what he called a "serious breach of security" in his office.
The newspaper said that "planted adhesives" had been found at "16 key locations" in the office.
No microphone or recording device had been found, Mr Mukherjee reportedly wrote to the prime minister.
The paper said that the Intelligence Bureau had investigated the complaint and said that the adhesives were "a sort of chewing gum".
Mr Mukherjee, 76, is the most senior member of the Congress-led federal government and one of India's leading politicians.

Papandreou still needs to convince several of his own Socialist lawmakers to support the austerity measures. At least one deputy, Alexandros Athanasiades, said Wednesday he would vote against them due to objections about selling off state assets.
"The deal is not yet done and dusted ? one major risk to the budget may be the size of street protests between now and the vote, with potential for popular pressure to get to some of the less committed MPs (lawmakers)," said Robert Ryan, an analyst at BNP Paribas.
All 155 lawmakers from Papandreou's Socialist party voted to back their leader in the 300-seat parliament, eliminating the chance of early elections. As they voted, several thousand protesters outside Parliament chanted "Thieves! thieves!" and riot police guarded the building.
"I understand the anger, the fear, and the question whether we will make it," Papandreou said. "My answer is that we have been making it every day for the last 20 months, with difficulties and mistakes, with a price to pay and with sacrifices but we are succeeding."
Papandreou was meeting party lawmakers Wednesday to shore up support.
Greece is being kept financially afloat by a euro110 billion ($157 billion) package of bailout loans granted by other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund last year, and has implemented strict austerity measures in return, cutting public sector salaries and pensions, increasing taxes and overhauling its welfare system.
But the country has struggled to meet its targets, missing many, and is now in negotiations for a second bailout, which Papandreou has said will be roughly the same size as the first.
Many financial experts believe that despite his best efforts, the task is too great and Greece is heading for a default.
If Papandreou does not get the new austerity measures passed, the 17-nation eurozone would have to hold emergency talks and would come under enormous pressure to find a new solution for the debt crisis that threatens all of them.
In Berlin, German Chancellor Merkel warned that imposing a so-called haircut on Greek debt ? reducing the amount to be repaid ? would endanger banks and other creditors who hold Greek bonds, as well as institutions that sold insurance policies against a default.
"Nobody around the globe knows exactly who holds those papers, who will have to pay how much," she said.
The French government called the Greek confidence vote "a very important step" toward more European aid for Greece, while the European Commission promised to stump up some cash to kickstart the Greek economy if the austerity measures are passed.
Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso told the European Parliament on Wednesday that existing funds currently blocked should be freed to push "growth and jobs" ? a topic that could be discussed at the EU leaders summit that begins Thursday in Brussels.
"If Greece can demonstrate that is generally committed to the reform package agreed with the EU and the IMF, we will accompany Greece on its journey back to growth," Barroso said.
Of the euro20 billion ($29 billion) in development funds budgeted to help Greece catch up with the richer regions in the 27-nation EU between 2007 and 2013, only euro4.9 billion ($7 billion) has actually been paid out. The rest is still sitting unused as Greece struggles to show it can come up with matching funds.
Tensions remained on the streets of Athens, with 100 members of the powerful GENOP electricity workers union occupying the Transport Ministry on Wednesday to protest plans to privatize their company. Workers began rolling 48-hour strikes on Monday causing brief, country-wide blackouts.
"Our struggle is to protect the last big public business of the country," said union President Nikos Fotopoulos. "Electrical energy is a public good and should not be played with."
Officials from the IMF, the European Commission and European Central Bank who have been overseeing Greece's financial reforms were in Athens to discuss the new austerity measures.
