Major League Baseball could realign into two 15-team leagues

Major League Baseball and the players' association are seriously considering realigning its leagues to have 15 teams each, with one National League club moving to the American League, according to an ESPN report on Sunday.

MLB and the players' association are in talks over a new labor agreement and besides realignment, commissioner Bud Selig has said the possibility of adding teams to the playoff structure is also on the agenda.

The National League has 16 teams and the American League has 14, with both leagues comprised of three divisions.

Currently, division winners reach the postseason along with a wild-card team from each league that has the best record outside its division champions.

According to a highly-ranked executive, one proposal raised in ownership committee meetings was eliminating divisions altogether, so that 15 AL and 15 NL teams would vie for five playoff spots within each league, ESPN reported.

Notes

? The New York Yankees put right-hander Bartolo Colon (strained right hamstring) and right-hander Amauri Sanit (sore right elbow) on the disabled list.

? The San Diego Padres are expected to place starting right-handed pitchers Aaron Harang and Dustin Moseley on the 15-day disabled list by Tuesday. Harang has been bothered by a bruise in his foot since last week. "I don't think it's fair to keep trying to go out there and make it worse over the long run," Harang said.

? Houston right fielder Hunter Pence was out of the lineup with tightness in his lower back. Pence has the longest current hitting streak in the majors at a career-best 22 games. Houston manager Brad Mills hopes to have Pence back for Monday night's game.

? Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer (strained right elbow) could return to the lineup this week.
