Many of the state?s top high school softball players will converge on Cony High School in Augusta on Thursday for the annual East-West Senior All-Star Games.

Action gets under way at 4 p.m. with the Classes C-D contest, followed at approximately 6:30 p.m. by the A-B game. Both games are scheduled for nine innings.

Just before the start of the A-B game, the 2011 Miss Maine Softball Award will be presented. Four finalists are up for the award, led by recently named Maine Gatorade Player of the Year Alexis Bogdanovich of South Portland.

Bogdanovich, a pitcher, went 10-0 during the regular season with a 0.30 earned run average. The righthander struck out 111 batters and walked just four in 69 innings. She also batted .564 with two home runs and 23 RBIs, and will play softball on scholarship next year at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H.

Other finalists for the award are Kayla Merrill, a pitcher for two-time Class C state champion Telstar of Bethel, Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A North player of the year Jess Poulin of Lawrence of Fairfield, and KVAC Class A South player of the year Miranda Riendeau-Card.

Criteria for the Miss Maine Softball Award includes being selected as a conference player of the year as a senior as well as achievement on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Two of the finalists are selected from Eastern Maine schools, and two are from the West.

Admission to the games is $5 for adults, with half the proceeds going to the Cony Boosters for hosting the event and half going to the Maine High School Sofball Coaches Association, sponsor of the event.

The softball postseason then continues on Monday, with the state?s East-West Underclass All Star Game at Saint Joseph?s College in Standish.

Many of the top underclass players in the state who are considered projectable collegiate players have been invited to participate in the game, sponsored in part by Frozen Ropes, and college coaches will be attending.

An extended pre-game will start at 4 p.m., with the game set to start at approximately 5 p.m.
