S.African children may have stopped sex predator (AP)

GREYTOWN, South Africa ? The words of little children from rural South Africa may have stopped an international sex predator.

U.S. investigators say Jesse Osmun confessed that as a Peace Corps volunteer, he sexually molested at least five girls at a South African shelter for AIDS orphans and other children. He now faces 30 years in prison under a U.S. anti-sex tourism law.

Before coming to South Africa, Osmun volunteered at an orphanage in Kenya where they say he did no harm.

His do-gooder identity may have helped cover a darker side. Then the little girls spoke.

Samkele Mhlongo, a police translator who helped an American investigator interview two of the victims from the Umvoti AIDS Centre where Osmun volunteered, says the girls were frightened. "They were brave to tell."
