PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- An ex-insurance adjuster has pleaded guilty to charges he helped a former Rhode Island radio personality file a phony insurance claim for more than $40,000.
Vincent DiPaolo of Johnston pleaded guilty to conspiracy and four counts of mail fraud on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Providence. He was the last of four defendants to plead guilty in connection to the scheme. His sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 27.
Prosecutors say DiPaolo helped ex-radio personality Lori Sergiacomi file an insurance claim after her North Providence home was intentionally damaged. Prosecutors say her home was damaged in the historic 2010 floods, but Sergiacomi lacked flood insurance. Her insurance claim blamed damage on a fictitious wind and rain storm.
DiPaolo told Chief Judge Mary Lisi that he had participated in a conspiracy involving then councilman John A. Zambarano, a former council president, Robert A. Ricci, and Sergiacomi.
Lisi could imprison DiPaolo to 85 years, although as part of his plea agreement, federal prosecutors have agreed to recommend a far lighter sentence.
Zambarano is the only member of the conspiracy to be sentenced in the case. He is serving 71 months for his role in both the insurance case as well as municipal corruption cases, which involved extorting developers for bribes totaling at least $46,000.
