In January 2012, compared to January 2011, the state budget revenues increased in all positions, while expenditure remained on the level of the exact month last year.

As a result, the state budget revenues exceeded expenses, creating a surplus of 42.8 million lats. However, a positive balance in January has also been observed in the previous years, except for 2011, when the state budget deficit hit 21.6 million lats, the Finance Ministry informs.

The state budget balance improved mainly due to higher government budget surplus, which accounted for 63.5 million lats (the annual surplus hit 2.2 million lats in 2011). The fact that, in comparison with the previous year, the deficit in the state social security budget fell 3.1 million lats down to 20.7 million lats also contributed to the successful performance.

According to the State Treasury, bigger state budget revenues were mainly ensured by climbing income in all positions of the state budget. Extra 55.4 million lats or 25.2% more was collected in the first month of 2012.

Revenues grew also due to improved tax collection performance. Compared to January 2011, 28.4 million lats or 16.8% more was collected in January 2012.

In January 2012, the state budget spending was slightly (5.6 million lats or 2.6%) lower than in the same month of 2011. Capital expenditure, maintenance expenditure and current expenditure compensated for growing expenditure on subsidies and grants.
